Scope for moving target ?

I would like to get a scope on my M14 that would be good for shooting a Deer if I happened to scare one, at about 50 yards away if it were to start running. I would also like to be able to take a 300 yard shot on a Deer also, if I scene one in a far off open spot.

Would I be able to do that kind of shooting with something like a Millet DMS 1-4x scope, or is using a Red Dot the only way to pick up a moving animal with a scope?

I would like to keep under $500. What would you guys recommend for this type of shooting?
 
300 yards is getting pretty far for a red dot. Millet makes a 1-4 I believe with an illumitated reticle in your price range. Shooting at 2ft x 2ft target with a red dot at 200M is difficult I don't think its a humane choice for hunting at 300 yards. The millet is getting good reviews and I think would serve you well.
 
I would be inclined to go open sights.50 yard shots, that ball peen hammer area.

Practice with that and you would be amazed what you can hit with some patience.

300 yards isn't as far as you think
 
This year I've been using a Leupold FX-II 2.5 IER scout scope on my deer gun.
This scope is awesome, its fast, can be used with both eyes open. At 2.5 X 28mm and with good glass Its fine for the 300yd shots.
They are tough as nails, And I have seen them mounted on M14's
Price is around $280 from US or "SLIGHTLY" highter up here at around the $425 mark.
 
I hunted an iron sighted m14 for a number of hunts. Seriously, those irons on there are hard to beat.

If you are using a scope, just leave it at 3x. If you see something that is far enough away, and you are in a stable enough position, add power.

I'd add to that astute observation that a person considering fast shots and moving target would be well served to consider the German #4 reticle or the Heavy Duplex. Lighted is also nice for drawing your eye to it for fast shots. I made a running shot on a warthog this summer that I credit to the lighted reticle I was using.

The 1 to 4 might not give you the magnification you want out to 300m, at least not in my opinion. Shooting at 200m with my fixed 4 powers seems to be the max I'd want to use it for.

I would say a 2-7 as mentioned before would be much more versatile with the wide range you are speaking of. There is also a reason your basic 3-9 is such a popular scope, and it would serve you well.

As far as moving targets goes, as long as you can pick up enough field of view at distance you are shooting magnification itself doesnt mean everything.

There are several scopes available with a wider field of view that my interest you. Getting the most magnification with a wide field of view is a nice feature.

It is kind of a balancing act between the 2 and I think a 2-7 would be my choice.

:confused: You're not serious are you? 4x at 200 looks the same as 1x at 50 yards. And 4x at 200 is a lot easier to shoot successfully than iron sights at 50 due to the single focal plane. I've made some of my longest shots on game with a fixed 4x.

But I wouldn't force anyone outside their capabilities.

all depends on our tired eyes, everyones are different. young kids can shoot the eyes out of flies at 200meters, we old geezers can't even hit the goose before it hits us.
