scope for my mark II FV

whoops, sorry about that. budget is ideally as low as i can get but i don't mind spending up to $150.

starting out with target shooting 50-100 yards but i will go as high as i can. it will likely only be for punching paper but i may shoot a pest here or there.

Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40. Take a look at P&D Enterprises.

bit more then i want to spend, like to keep it under 150.

any more suggestions?

also is there a tutorial on how to figure out what all the info means, i've tried to look but i can't seem to find anything.

At the price range your quoting I would stay away from illuminated optics. As Travis says the Nikon Pro staff would be good or anything in the mid lower end Bushnell. If it is not a dedicated .22 then the parallax may be off so you might consider something with adjustable parallax. Phil.

3x-9x ? Nah, what are you really going to be using the 3x setting for? Moving targets?
Srsly... 4x-16 is the lowest I'd be thinking about and 6x-24x seems about right to me or a .22 boltgun. And really, 8x-32x isn't that far out.

Ok, so you're thinking "I said $150!!"... well, the nice thing about a .22lr is the low recoil, so a scope that might be less robustly constructed (IE cheap) will last forever, or until it falls off your motorcycle while you're driving down a logging road:redface:

So, go to "futong.com/catalog/item/2129585/1590454.htm" (add the w3 to it yourself) and have a look...
It's a 6x-24x with a "multi-dot" reticle (it's not really "mil-dot" except at a specific power) and an adjustable objective lens (both really nice things to have on a rimfire scope) for about $100, delivered.

As for the quality, I own a bunch of Futong (Fitco) scopes, I've had to send 2 back over the years, one wouldn't focus, right out of the box, and one had the reticle illuminator fail, both were replaced (the warranty is only one year!).
I have an 8x-32x that was mounted on my M14 for about a thousand rounds, then went to my 6.5-'06 for a few hundred and then to my .30-'06 for a couple hundred, and it still works fine. It'll be back on my 6.5 when I get it back together.

Fitco are great rimfire scopes, I suspect that the internal mech. is softer metal, so if you are one of those shooters that do a lot of cranking on the windage and elevation knobs, I'll bet the adjustments will get pretty mushy, pretty quickly, and I wouldn't trust one on hunting gun I was taking on a hunt that would be ruined if the scope failed, but; you get what you pay for.

4-16x on a 22LR? what for? 3-9x is good enough up to 200m. The 22LR round is not.
I have a Bushnell Rimfire 3-9x on my Mark II FV.

.22lr at 200m? It's great long range practice and comes pretty close to duplicating .308 ballistics at 1000 yards; but that's beside the point right now...

When I'm shooting at a gopher that is just peeking his eyes up over the rim of his hole, even if it's only at 20m, I like lots of magnification because the top 1/2 of his head is only about 1cm high, or when I'm trying to whack a marmot that's peeking at me over top of an irrigation pipe, where a miss can mean a hole in the pipe (and I hate fixing those damned tubes!), I want 20x, even at 20m, and especially at 50m!

hmm, just watching some video's on youtube and i think i like the higher magnifications.

splatter, i'm guessing you trust the fitco website and they are trustworthy. wondering if i should try some out with the same specs first before i order one.

Ja, if you can find a high powered scope to try first, that'd be ideal. Just remember that there are draw-backs too, you probably won't be doing any offhand shooting if you mount an 8x-32x, you'll have to find a rest or a supported position to keep the gopher in the crosshairs. But I have a 6x-24x (not a Fitco; but still a Chinese) mounted on my Cooey 64b, which is my primary gopher-gun, and I often shoot it standing, unsupported (but no "snap-shots", and no running rats either).
As for the website... I've ordered probably 10 scopes over about 5 years, and I've never had a problem, YMMV.

(if you're local to me, I've got a scope I can lend you to try)

i'm in Ontario unfortunately, but now that i feel confident enough i will head up to bass pro shops and have a look at what they have and try some out. then again i still need to get the rifle first before all of this.

thanks for all the help.

any other good brands to look out for?
