Scope for my "new" .222 heavy barrelled rifle...

Hi Folks,

I just bought an "old school" Remington 700 Varmint w/ heavy barrel in .222. I'm trying to decide what scope to go with.

I will mostly be using it to try and shoot tiny groups on paper, but I also want the rifle/scope combination to be useable if I ever get the opportunity to go on a gopher shoot.

I have been thinking of one of the original Weaver T series, fixed power scopes, but it seems as though they are only available now in 24X or 36X. I'm not sure if this will end up being too much magnification for me. I know others (like Sightron) make fixed power target scopes as well, and in some lower powers. I guess what I want is a scope with at least 10X magnification, and a finer-then-usual crosshair; at least compared to the average duplex most hunting scopes come with.

Your thoughts and suggestions, esteemed shooting brethren? :)

If you're trying to print tiny groups at 100 or more yards, 24x is not overpowered at all. Leupold makes a great scope for that kind or work. The 6.5-20 EFR will let you shoot anything from 50 feet to infinity, which would likely give the best best range for hunting gophers.
 
If you can find one, an Unertl 15x would look nice on the older Rem. They had a target dot, too.

As for a new scope, you could try a Bushnell Elite 4200 in 6-24x. I'm not sure if they have the option of ordering one in a fine duplex or not, but I like the thicker duplex because it's easier to see on the targets.

Leupold has a fine line duplex, and you could get their target scopes in 6-18x if they still make it?
 
The Bushnell 3200 10X might be a good option if you're on a budget (married). I certainly agree that the Unertl would be nice but for that be prepared to shell out $800 or more, depending on model.
 
6-18 Nikon buckmaster is a decent optic for the money, plenty of power for 100 yard groupings.
How much dough are you looking to spend?
Hawke make some nice scopes , I have a new 6-24 on my 223 that is really prices right. FS
 
I was hoping to find something decent for $500-600. I was going to go with a 3200 Elite 10x, and may yet; at least for now.

I had never hear of Hawke Optics before...who sells them in Canada?
 
Still can't beat the Leupold for your budget. There is a 6.5-20 EFR on the EE right now for $700, and another sold for $600-650 earlier this month. If you're patient, you can net an excellent scope for ~40% less than new retail. Sightron also makes very good scopes in that magnification and price range. Jerry at Mysticprecision can hook you up. Falcon Optics also makes a pretty decent scope. I have the 4-14x44 on my .22, and though it is somewhat lacking in magnification, I have no trouble putting 10 rounds inside and inch at 100 yards with it. They also make a 25x version, and I know that Frontier is a dealer, it retails for just over $500.
 
I have just been offered a Weaver K12 scope for a very reasonable price. I think this scope will look just great on my "vintage" Remington heavy barreled rifle. :)
