Looking to build this into a hunt/range gun. Not looking to shoot 1000m. Furthest I've ever shot is 700m but I don't have access to that distance anymore. Looking for it to be reliable in the 400-500m max at the range with factory ammo. I don't reload.

My mind and my guilt is trying to keep this build all in at 2k max. So far with some of the odds and ends I have at most $500 left for the scope. If I spend less I won't be sad. I've already got nikon P cantilever rings so my scope has to be 1 inch.

At the top end Tenda has the Bushnell Elite Tactical LRS Rifle Scope 5-15x 40mm for $499. I already have two older Bushnell Elite 3200s which this used to be. A plus in my book compared to the other options is made in Japan although that may be less of a selling point now a days to some?

Other options are the Vortex tactical 3-9x40 for $299 at Prophet River and I've seen the 4-12×40 in the $370 range. Both are made in Philippines?

A couple weeks ago Cabelas has the Nikon P tactical 308bdc for I think about $260 but I missed the sale. I know stuff will start poppin up with Black friday so maybe it will come back.

Let me know what you folks think.

I saw that thread. Good information in there but his budget is about double what I'm looking at.

There are some recommendations less than $500 dollars which fits your criteria. Tenda has a bunch of Bushnell scopes on sale as well.

I would suggest if its possible to save up a bit more there are alot of reasonably good scopes in the 1000-1500$ range. Look for sales or used optics. I bought my viper pst from cabelas on sale for $1089.00. The nikon fx1000 seems to be a really good value aswell. If your looking for sfp there are alot of options for the same price range.

Have a look at the Vortex diamondback FFP scopes. I just got one off the EE and so far I like it. I'm not going to pretend it's perfect, but for my needs right now it works great. When I upgrade I will just move it to another rifle. Haven't box tested it yet but with the reticle, I will most likely just do holdovers.

I posted this in the other thread, hope it helps

A GREAT budget scope is the Bushnell elite tactical straight 10x40, can be had second hand for about $200, I have had a few over the years and have one right now on my famae and a new one on my shelf that I plan to put on my stag when I finish building it. Since Its a fixed power scope I find that the glass is more on par with the mid level variable power scopes, great reticle and it just looks good all round, holds up to 308 recoil all day. May not be everyone cup of tea but its a good scope to atleast get you in the door till you can find the scope you really like/want. I don't really have anything bad to say about besides no illuminated reticle which isn't really needed.#

PS, I've had 4k plus Schmidt and benders, a couple acogs and trijicon optics, leupolds, elcans, vortex and everything in between and that bushnell really left a warm impression on me haha.

Forgot to mention that you can even find them for around that much nib second hand. Also the other day I was able to snag a mint vortex viper pst 1-4 off the ee for $400 shipped, if you're not in a hurry just check the ee regularly till something catches your eye.

I have a Elite 3200 10x40 on a Rem 700. Seen lots on the EE and would definately consider another one but I plan to hunt with this and don't know if a fixed magnification would be the best.

"most" hunting applications are easily covered with a 3-9x40 or similar.
I don't know about other hunters but I buy my optics to suit the ranges of the caliber i'm shooting so having a scope on a .308 that is much beyond 8 or 9 power is wasted on me.
My 7mm mag can reach out , but then again, I'm not going to be shooting anything past 500 yards unless I'm in a survival situation. I put a 4-16x42 on that one.
If you are punching paper more than hunting, I would throw all that out and get an optic that allows you to zoom in and see your groups.
a fixed 10 power is not ideal for hunting animals. People maybe, and that's why the "tactical" reference for those fixed 10 optics.
I'm seriously thinking I might try the bushnell 1-6 with the single point mount it comes with. It's for a stag10 .308 that I plan to use for under 100 yard deer hunting, mostly from a tree stand.
