Hey there, I've got a pre '64 model 70 in .30-06 that I'd like to put optics on. I've never shot with a scope before and was wondering what would be a good set up for it. So far I've been leaning towards a Leupold VX 3 in the 2-8power range. I'd like to keep it looking a little old school though. ???????

The 2.5-8x would look appropriate, but I would also consider the 1.75-6x32 in the VX-3 lineup. Large objectives were less common back in the day.

Leupold STD or equivalent turn-in bases and rings would be the traditional mounting system. If price is no object, I would choose a set of Conetrol mounts; they're pretty sleek-looking.

I love the 2.5-8x Leupold. Why I don't have one is a mystery. If I was buying a scope for that rifle, and wasn't bent on nostalgia, I would get the 2.5-8x VX3 as well. If I was being nostalgic I would try to find an old Leupold 3x. Not pure nostalgia like the K4 Weaver, but nostalgic enough.
