I am looking for a new scope, specifically for Mapleseed/Appleseed events. My requirements are as below:

- Generous eye relief
- Forgiving eye box
- Adjustable focus and parallax down to 10-15 meters
- Magnification minimum 2 or 3x, maximum is not as important, maybe between 9 and 15

Budget is 600$, of course lower is better.

I have seen much recommendations for the:

NIKON PROSTAFF P3 TARGET EFR 3-9x40AO PRECISION (SKU:16606)
LEUPOLD VX-FREEDOM EFR 3-9x33 (SKU:175075)

Any other recommendations or points to look for?

I am not sure that an AO is the best for Mapleseed. I find that while an AO permits a very sharp focus and elimination of parallax, all my AO scopes have a shallower depth of focus, and fiddling with the AO at any change in distance is more necessary. A rimfire 3-9 will have itself prefocused at perhaps 50 yards, and will be in focus through a wider range of distances. The AO helps with trying to shoot those elusive 1/4" groups at 50 yards, but is not really necessary for a shooting event that relies more on technique than equipment.

I have old tired eyes, and I still shoot better with open sights than scope at 25 yards. That being said, get a good red-dot with no magnification. That is what I shoot scope class with at our club, and I do very, very well with it. Opensight is a 455 "Trainer"; optic class is a 452.

I used a Bushnell AR 22 scope to get my Rifleman patch. Those who haven’t shot a MapleSeed, or haven’t earned a patch have no idea what you need. Just get something that allows you a clear, parallax free sight picture at 25m. The 10 point scoring area on the last prone stage are very small, so get something that lets you see those tiny targets that are worth 100 points.

I use a prostaff rimfire II routinely at 25 meters 3-9x (no AO though). It is on top of my Savage MkII g and is very accurate perfectly in focus at 25 yard at about 3-5x

What is a maple seed/apple seed event never heard of it?

Appleseed is in the states, and is what MapleSeed is modeled after. It is a day long event that teaches people the fundamentals of marksmanship. You’ll learn how to shoot at 25m using a sling only while standing, sitting/kneeling, and prone. When you shoot the MQT (MapleSeed Qualifier Target) at the end, you will earn a nice Rifleman patch if you obtain a score of 210 or greater out of a possible 250. There is a KD (known distance) shoot in the works, which is shot out to 400m using a centerfire rifle and a sling again. No bipods, bags, pump pillows, or other junk are allowed.
