I need a scope for my new rifle build which is a .260 Remington, which will be used primarily for target shooting. The absolute maximum range that I will be shooting is around 1,000 yards at paper and steel.
My budget is $2,500.00 before tax. What scope should I purchase?

For target a Sightron is seriously hard to beat, the SIII series , you can get up to 50X and 60mm Objective and be under your budget and a nice selections of reticles that work really well for target.

Max 1,000 yards I would go with an 8 - 32.I am very happy with mine, I have SI, II and III's
You can get into Night Force and Leupold and Vortex as well but the target crowd sure love the Sightrons for glass , options and reticles, they also show mirage amazingly well.

I would take a very serious look at that scope.

There are also many other options there within the Sightron line if something else looks appealing to you.

I agree with Kelly. The Sightrons seem to be very well reported on. Nightforce has their Precision Benchrest series of scopes which have front focus and 40MOA of internal adjustment for the 12-42x, 50MOA for the 8-32x, or the Competition model which is 15-55x and has 55MOA elevation and 50 MOA Windage and side focus. You won't go wrong with either but I can speak as a multiple Nightforce owner that they are excellent glass.
