Hey all. I have a 3-9 x 40mm Simmons 8-point (POS) that came with my Savage 7mm Rem Mag ordered from SIR. The crosshairs are not level. Is there a way other then loosening the rings and turning the whole unit?

I can't find a way and before I sent it back, I thought I'd ask....

Thanks

If the crosshairs are unlevel in relation to the rifle, you will have to loosen the rings and rotate the scope. If they are unlevel in relation to the adjustment knobs, send it back. Even a POS scope should have properly aligned crosshairs.

RO :)

Yes they are. Thats what I thought. Thanks.

What should I get for a replacement?
I never meant to keep this one for long anyway. I can spend $200-$300...

Lots of good buys out there for $300 in new scopes... Rifleman, Fullfield, Elite... or you can get a used one... whatever you buy pick a name brand with a lifetime warranty and you can't go wrong

Anglin, don't cheap out. My advice is to buy a Leupold. Considering that you will die long before the scopes will, they are a darned fine investment.

 I'll try not to. If I spend much more then $300, I have to tell the wife... There is a rumor that we Albertans are getting a $300 rebate. That would go nicely towards a more pricey scope.

While we're talking about it, I would like a little more magnification on the new one. Suggestions?

if you want more power than a 3-9, try a Bushnell Elite 3200 4-12x40. Should be able to get your hands on one for less than $350.

If you can make due with 9x, try a new Weaver V9 3-9x38mm, they're really nice scopes for about $225.

I bought a Weaver 2-10x38 a few months ago, it is an ok scope so far. It has a realy narrow field of view but the optics are realy good for it's price. I don't know how well it will stand up to regular use I guess time will tell.

If you want something that will be reliable for years go with a Leupold vx1 or Bushnell 3200 series. They last a long time. The most important thing for me is that they hold zero. Nothing worse than a scope you can't trust.

Are you a red neck too Anglin?

My advice is to not go too much more than 3-9X. Like you, I used to shoot a B&L 3x9 that eventually crapped out...so I replaced it with a 5 x 15. It is too much scope for a hunting gun IMO. I do not shoot past 300 usually so I am pretty much good with the 3 x 9. My new scope has a parallax adjustment on it too and that is just one more thing to #### around with when it is time to make a quick shot.

Just my two cents worth, your mileage will vary.

oh would you #### off already

 I tend to get a little red in the neck area at times

Thanks for the advice guys. I have been trying to sight in this new tool with the crosshairs cockeyed. All I have to show for it is a sore shoulder. Savage says the gun is boresighted out of the box. BS!! I had to fight with it just to get on paper at 50 yards. I called SIR and there will be no problem returning it. I will have to bite the bullet and pay a little more locally for a new one as I'm running out of time before this year's first hunt. I'll post what I get.

Thanks again!

Did you try putting up a want ad in the exchange of parts and bits? Might be suprised what someone may have.
I had a Bushnell Buckhorn 3-9x 32, it was crap.
Also tried B&L 3200 3-9, you have to have perfect alignment with your eye looking through the perfect center ot the scope or you get a hallow effect (mine did anyway).
I ended up with all leupolds. I also have a weaver that is alright. It depends on how serious you are and how much use the gun will see. If you only shoot a box of shells a year then maybe it's an option, if you want to enjoy it for long term spend the bucks. A co worker went to the states for a week, picked me up a
Leupold vari x II 3-9x 40 matte for $280 CDN!
The time and money you waste in trying to get by with okay kills you in the long run. :(

Good luck!
Check buysell.com as well, there are a pile of ads from the Calgary and Edmonton regions.

I can get a Bushnell Scopechief 3-9x40 for new in box for $150. Good deal?

Not bad. The Scopechief was replaced by the Elite Series, IIRC.

I have scopechief off a .270 I once had. It was a decent scope, not as nice as the 4200's, or Leupolds, but not bad...

I thought about putting a wanted add up, but I need a new one right away. My first hunt this year is at the end of the month. I checked buysell.ca and thats where I found the Scopechief. It's looking like I'm going with the Scopechief or an Elite 3200.

Yes we will have some there, after Steves #####in and whining I was reluctant to mention that. But I know there will be a very large number of dealers and public with scopes to sell, and there could be EXACTY what a person is needing
