Scope magnification, what is the difference?

I notice a couple different types of optics that list the magnification different ways. When the specs list 2-7X40, I know that it means variable magnification from 2x to 7x with a 40mm objective. But when it lists 2X7X40 does it mean the same thing? Or am I missing something?

yes. it's just a different way of putting it- 2x gives magnifaction twice what a normal eye would see at that range, and 7x gives a magnification 7 times what a normal eye would see at that range- BOTH scopes have a 40mm OBJECTIVE- that's the size of the lens furthest from your eye- both scopes cover the area from 2 power to 7 power

Yes, they both describe the same thing, but 2-7x40 is correct, and 2x7x40 is incorrect.

ok, i'll give you that- btw , in description it would be called a two-to-seven by 40, whereas the incorrect would be 2 by 7 by 40- in other words one is describing the capabilities of the scope ie 2 power to 7 power, whereas the incorrect model is a math problem- 2 times 7 which is 14, by 40- 560- which makes no sense
