I am going to pick up a K98 Mauser this week. Use will be for targets, moose and deer. My vision is not great so I want to put a scope on it. I want something solid that will not easily lose its zero. What type of mount and scope that can be bought in Canada do you suggest? Thank you.

Well you can goto CT or any gunshop and pick up Weaver #45 and 46 bases 8$ for both. Those are the ones needed for Mauser 98. If you plan to use a weaver K4 you can get away with med/low weaver rings.

I prefer using Leupold STD bases and rings. You will need High Rings for those. If you want the bolt to open, if it a military K98 action. I tried med and couldn't open the bolt.

Now you will need to get the rifle drilled and tapped. There some non drill and tapped ones but no experience with them.

Yes it will be a military one - German K98

I'm missing the logic on a full military K98K to be drilled and tapped and turned into a demilitarized sporting rifle in 2015. If you want a K98K to start or add to a milsurp collection that's great, but to turn an original mauser K98K into a half ass sporting rifle today is out of the question. First you'll pay anywhere from 496 to 700 for a Russian capture even, then you'll have to get it set up for a scope at around 200, and you are left with a heavy, rifle that was never meant to take a scope in the modern sense of the word with a low profile and nice tight cheek weld without s riser added to the stock, another additional cost.

If someone is giving you the rifle, and someone is going to set it up for a scope for nothing, and you don't mind ruining a military collectible rifle, then have at her. Otherwise,..spend 350 on a Savage axis to hunt with in economical .308Win with the money you'll spend to set up the K98K after the it is bought, and then just buy a K98K and leave it original to caress.

Refurbs are hardly collectable. Any value they had as collectors pieces were removed by the Yugs when they refurbed and stored them. They are for shooting now.
You can also get a number of period correct mounts and optics from various sources.. since the rifle is no longer an original, does it matter if your optics are not original if they are period correct?

Take a look at the accumounts web page, they sell replica mounts and optics for all sorts of rifles, but the K98 parts are their most popular. You can get faithful repro mounts and a ZF4 scope if you want to keep it a bit more original.
