Hello.

I was wondering if anyone has installed a scope mount on one of those old mossberg bolt action 12g? I just made a deal on one and was wondering what the best option would be? I had a no name one years ago that had dovetails ground into the receiver but I guess that isnt the norm.

Thanks

Eric

Haven't got the Mossberg to which you are referring, but I would suggest you check the Weaver scope mount chart...I assume that you can find it on their website. If not, most retailers have a copy that they can check for you. It will give the part numbers you need for the front and rear bases if Weaver makes them, and they probably do.

I would stick with two piece bases if possible. I have scoped a couple of bolt action Savage 12gauges in the past, and found that they occasionally suffered ejection problems with a one-piece bridge mount. Empties would bounce off the mount and back into the open action.

Having seen quite a few of these, I would say that if it isn't drilled and tapped/dovetailed, your best bet you be to find a set of bases that match the receiver contour and have it drilled and tapped.

I could be wrong, but I believe that most of these were NOT drilled and tapped, and relied on iron sights or just a plain bead. I have seen a few that were dovetailed though, and IMHO, I can't see a dovetail mount setup holding zero very well.

I would agree with jjohnwm, and recommend you stay away from one piece bases. A 12ga hull is a rather large object, and ejection on some of those bolt guns is easily thwarted. A person might also be wise to stay away from low rings as well. It would be one of those "piece it together and see what happens" projects.

Best of luck. Post pictures when you get something figured out!
