I’m looking for some help on installing my recently purchased scope mount. I have used http://www.surplusrifle.com as a reference and have a very good idea how to install the mount, but where I am hung up is how to drive out the pin holding in stripper guide. Is there a certain tool or technique to use? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks Guys.

If you take out the bolt and drive the roll pin down through the clip guide and reciever, I have found this to be the best method for me.

Actually just take the rifle out of the stock, the pin will drop free of the receiver from behind the bolt....so the bolt removal isn't actually needed.

If you don't have a drift pin/punch.....I have used a small nail......file the tip flat or use the head of a finishing nail. The first time I tried it the nail tip was sleaved by the roll pin and that was hell just to get the nail out.

Great! These suggestions are exactly what I needed to read. I was dreading a fifty dollar tool or worse, a seventy five dollar an hour visit to the gunsmith. Two good suggestions, and I’m sure with a little tapping and possibly a couple of swears I’ll get her. I will post my progression / regression tomorrow and thanks for the responses m39a2 and girlsgunsandfastbikes.

O'Kelly's Boys, I purchased what looks like the same mount on surplusrifle.com’s web-site. It’s pretty much the same as the Norinco Tactical mount, but around a hundred bucks cheaper. And yes, I have anticipated the issues with going with a cheap mount, but the only way I learn life’s little lessons is the hard way. With a couple of bucks left over to drink away the regret.

Well it took a little more time and effort they originally anticipated, by she’s on. GG&FB your suggestion worked perfectly, without removing the bolt. I had a couple more hang ups along the way, but the amateur gunsmith in me solved them. Next step is to choose a scope for the project and zero her in. Any suggestions on a good scope suitable for a M14, but won’t break the bank???
Thanks again for all the help guys…chev

What ever you like. A cheap Tasco hunting scope will get you started, then go up from there.

Elsewhere I posted that the line of sight on a typical scoped M14 is too high above the normal comb for a good head posture and cheek weld. To solve that, guys get some form of cheekrest that lifts their head about 2". Fine, but they don't do anything on the buttplate to keep the recoil forces up in line with the line of sight. Consequently, all the recoil is taken up on a very small area around the collarbone and shoulder muscle. No stockmakers or home craftsmen, except for some ugly Israeli sniper stocks, seems to have recognized this deficiency.

You won't necessarily have issues with a budget scope...but more likely keeping it working on a cheap mount.

On budget, I think a scout mount is an good choice if you aren't will be pay for something like an ARMS or Smith.
