Hi, I missed out on those barrels at ellwood epps for the garand.

I've been selling off alot of my guns lately, only keeping the ones I'm shooting most often.

I've got a Garand that's a real dog. I'd like to mount a scope on it, and maybe rebarrel it, as the rifling is almost completely gone.

Money is the prime object. If I rebarrel this, I need to do it on the cheap for this gun. I can afford a Citadel, or maybe a Criterion, but not a custom shilen tube. I just can't justify that much on one.

what are my options here in Canada?

Dunno if you can find a used SA takeoff or a VAR barrel that someone has removed. I can do it for you, that's gonna save you a pile of $$ :D

Any other barrels (Hart, Douglas, Shilen, Krieger  ) will set you back more!!

Here's one option for the garand. S&K mount.

Garand barrel

Don't know if they ship to Canada, but Numrich Gun parts had some a month ago. PM me if you don't have any luck, I may know where there's a parts gun. Good luck, everyone should own at least 1 Garand.

There is a business out west importing very nice Garand barrels, http://www.riflebarrels.ca/ pricy though, I got a scout scope mount for my Garand from Numrich, also pricey but pretty nice quality afaict - you also can use the irons with this base if you use QD rings. Best regards Tony.

Edit:I don't know if you can use this scout scope mount for a Garand if you have a heavy barrel, someone here might know, I have not mounted the base yet.

Scoping an M-1 can be problematic because of the loading system. The offset to the left mounts are one way, a scout mount is another. The US leather cheekpieces are not to raise the cheek so much as to offst the face to the left.
I have heard of mounting a scope over the receiver, and eliminating the clip ejection feature. Clip stays in the rifle and rounds are loaded singly.

A friend had a M-1 with the offset S&K. I didn't really care for the offset arrangement, but options are limited, and it worked well enough otherwise.

Yeah, it's not a normal feeling to off set you shooting position. Same with the K31 scope mounts that I have seen. a little more to the center, but still off to one side.

I think you misread my post.

Yea, no kidding, it was a long day. Don't know what I was thinking.

The Citadel barrels can have problems. I did one rifle and the barrel was out of index (Could have been just the one I had.) The hand guard grooves were off center to the left, a bit of stock work, and it was not that noticeable. I have read others have had some indexing issues. I suspect that factory seconds were removed from the scrap bin. Shot very well.

Have you found a CDN source for the Citadel? The lowest cost for these is around $150 USD. I didn't find a CDN source. Criterion (a subsidiary of Krieger Barrels) Wow, they start at $225 USD and go up from there. These both need to be imported.

I did find w ww.riflebarrels.ca/html/m-14__m1a_and_garand.html. They start at $375 CDN.

Brownells has Wilson barrels for $233.99 - $274.95 USD. I was told by Epps one can add 25% to 40% on top of the exchange to get one in the country.(I know they have no intention of importing any more) Just a cost estimate.

Ok, quoting or referencing USD dose not mean I am suggesting some one import them. That's why I have suggested CDN companies…

I can't help you with the barrel thing, but I put a mini-scout mount (Amega Ranges) on mine and I love it.

Most people very quickly get used to a forward mounted scope and they are actually very accurate at short and medium ranges. I've since added a leather lace-on cheek piece, and this rifle shoots under 1.5" all day long. I've had a three friends and my wife try this rifle and they all love it, and shoot well with it right away. You might want to consider something similar.

It's not a big deal, there is not even a charge, DFAIT will issue one, you just have to get the form fill it out, send it in and they send it back approved, now whether you will save enough $ to make it worthwhile through Numrich, that's another matter, I didn't say you were trying to do anything underhanded, sorry if it sounded that way.
