Scope Mounting on Grooved Receiver

Good morning all,

I've tried a couple times to mount various optics to the grooved receiver on a rimfire rifle, but they always seem to be crooked. The optics I've tried are a Tasco BKRD30/22 red dot, Simmons .22 magnum scope and a UTG .22 to picatinny rail adapter. I've tried them on a couple different rifles as well but no matter what, they just don't seem to sit right.

Am I doing something wrong or is this just how they work? It probably doesn't really affect its usage once zeroed, but it is kind of annoying from an asthetics standpoint. Also, when looking through the optic, you can see the iron sights off to the side which seems kind of weird.

In the picture here, I have the rail that comes with a Ruger 10/22, with the Tasco mounted on top to try to show how it sits to the right.

I'm not sure I understand, but it seems like the issue may be to do with your rings more then the rail, I guess you need to check that: 1. both the rings sit centered on the rifle, 2. the rail was milled at center of the rifle, and 3. that the rail adapter (if used) is at center.

Be aware that there are different sizes of the dovetails on receivers,
3/8" and 11mm being the most used, but not the only ones.
A lot of the adapters are made to fit only one size,
and if they are used on the wrong size of dovetail, the rings/optics will be off-center.
Usually the adapters that have a 2-piece clamp system (lid on the side held with screws) are
for one size only.
Also, if you put the lid upside down, you will have a bad day.

Other adapters are symmetric (one piece system) and can accommodate 2 sizes:

Maybe your cheap reddot is out of wack?
I could see the whole thing being slightly off to one side due to the way the clamps work but it shouldn't be twisted.
Some in focus pictures with better lighting and a bit more explanation of your issue would help.....

Alright, it took me a bit, but I did get some better pictures.

First of all, this is the Tasco: http://www.cabelas.ca/product/5560/tasco-1x30mm-22-red-dot-sight
Although I didn't take pictures of it, this is the scope that I had the same problem with: http://www.cabelas.ca/product/24337/simmons-22-mag-rimfire-riflescopes

Here are a couple pictures of the Tasco. To me, it looks like it is meant for a narrower rail. You can see the piece on the left hand side by the nut is actually crooked when its tightened. Its not that the optic is twisted but like it is leaning over to the one side. I'm not very good at explaining this so I hope the pictures are self-explanatory. I've looked closely and the scope grooves on the Marlin 795 were definitely machined correctly, and not offset to one side.

On the 10/22 rail:

And on my Marlin 795:

The Tech Sights for my Marlin 795 fit both the 10/22 rail and well as the 795 just fine.

You are using low quality mounts and optics, so they could just be put of whack, but the first pic looks like you have the clamp plate upside down, try flipping it... your rings also look improperly sized as Dr.Lector suggested.

In the last pic you need to flip the keeper over. Might be the issue with the other as well. I've had to use a file on cheap aluminum rings before to fit them properly, and open up the hole as well.

edit:
3 replies at the same time saying the same thing....hmmm
