I have in my hands a rare set of Sako Optilock quick detach mounts and rings, received in a package from a good CGN.

I need to switch the 1" rings for 30mm ones. The problem is that I cannot get the ring mounting screws to budge; so much so that the allen heads are threatening to strip.

Previous owner reports that they came from the factory with the rings already mounted in the bases; the configuration of the original box supports this.

UPDATE: The documentation in the box states that the rings/mounts are shipped with the screws lightly tightened. The mystery deepens!

I think it's likely that someone used some unknown locking compound on this assembly; I believe I can see a trace of it around the ring-base junction.

How should I go about removing the rings? I'm loathe to apply heat, as I suspect it will ruin the polished bluing?

I suppose the alternative is to trade them on the EE to someone who can use them as-is?

Use another Allen key that fits and heat it up real hot install it in the screw and leave it there until it cools off.As it is cooling down quench the hot screw with a birthday candle unlit to let some wax be drawn into the threads.Remove that key and install another key that fits and it should remove the screw. It may take a couple of try's but it should come out.Don't worry about the bluing on the screws it should be ok.If not you can learn how to fire blue the screws. Hope this helps out.

Thanks, I'll try that. I wasn't worried about the bluing on the screws, because they're hidden underneath the base. They also appear to be a common metric cap screw.

It was the base itself I was worried about. I hadn't thought about heating a tool to heat the screw; I had envisioned having to apply a torch to the area or something.
