I know there are a few of you running .35 Whelans, so I thought I would ask what you have done about scoping them. I 've got a mauser build sitting at Gord Whitman's shop, and it's time to think about optics. Uses for the rifle will be moose and black bear. I'm thinking 1-2x n the low end, and 4-7x on the high end, with a heavy reticle. Any thoughts? As much as I would love a 1.75-6 illum leupy, it ain't gonna happen!

Take your pick - either the Leupold VXII 1-4 x 20 (56700) or VXII 2-7 x 33
(56730) or better still, the VXII 2-7 with the LR (Long Range) reticle (61270). Mount either as low as possible. Both are great value for the money.

Burris Fullfield II 1.75-5x20 ~$300:)

I was looking at a VX 2 3-9x33 scope at a shop down island a while back. Not sure of the exact model number. Real nice and slim and would look right at home on a nice custom mauser IMHO  I think the same model comes in 2-7. I believe the one I saw was less than 4 bills...

I've got a 2x-7 leupold on my M70 classic featherweight in 7mm-08, and it's great. My one thought is low light over a bear bait- is that reticle going to disappear? Maybe I pick one up and have a heavy duplex installed...

Due to the range limitations a 1.5x5 or 2x7x33 VXII luepold should be perfect.

I'm not real comfortable with my 35 Whelen at ranges much over 400yds and have taken several Moose and Elk at 350 to 400yd(measured) distances. I have Leupold 1.5x5 on both rifles and keep them set at 3x.
Great caliber!
Works well for me.
Good Luck

I have a Leupold Euro 30 in 2X7X33 on my Ruger No.1 Tropical in .375 H&H.
Before that I had it on my Marlin 1985 SS in 45-70 Govt. An excellent and the bigger 30mm tube does carry a wee more light.

My first pick would be a VX III 1.5-5X20mm . Second choice would be a VXII 1-4X20mm. Third, would be a Burris fullfield II 1.75-5X20mm. I like the Small scopes with lots of eye relief and wide FOV.

I have a 3-9 x 40 Elite 3200 on my 338-06 - a near twin to your Whelen - and have never felt I was "over-scoped" While most shots on game are under 100 yards your Whelen is good to go to 400 yards or so you might as well have that extra bit on top in case you need it.

Don't over look the Leupold 1x4. It's a great scope for less than the 1.5x5.

I have a 1.5x5 on my 7600/35Whelen and a 1x4 on a 760/.308. I like them both, but the 2x7 might look better on a boltgun.

My 35 improved is a Rem 700 Titanium with a 24" Shilen tube seated in a Mcmillan M40a1 stock. a Leupold varixIII 3.5-10x40 with low rings sits on
top.I keep it on 3.5x If a longer shots present itself it gets cranked up.
400 or 500 yrds is not outside the 35 improved capabilities when proper
loads are used.

"range limitations"...what range limitations?.....my Whelen launches a 225 Partition at 2725 which puts it about 10" low at 300 meters when set 2-1/2" high at 100m.....

I have a 3-9X Leupold on mine;) :D

35 Whelen

I should rephrase my comment, i consider 300 yards the whelens realistic limit, farther if you are a good shot so a 2x7x33 would be perfect in my opinion, not to say a 3x9 is'nt fine it is just not necessarily needed. It all depends on what type of hunting you do and how long of shots you are capable of.
