I'm new to the LR game, I'm wondering about a few scope brands. I'd like to know of your experiences, good or bad about theses brands.
They are: BSA, Barska and Leatherwood. Thanks in advance,

-Jason

i just bought a , 8 x32 x44 ir mill dot , from tactical innovations, i realy like the quality , the clicks are very audible to hear, paralax is smooth, my gun smith is impressed as well, i paid , $319.50 to my door,,,

My 2 cents - Experience with two BSAs.
First was a "Cats Eye" (I think) model - second round out of a 7mm Rem Mag broke it inside.
Other one is a 6-24 on a 50BMG (honest) Has lived over 200 rounds and still OK. Adjustments not real precise for dialing out to long range, and clarity isn't super, but it works.
Currently being replaced with a Nightforce. (Kinda like trading a Moped on a Ferrari - but so far I've gotten away without telling the wife how much it REALLY cost.)

For long range rifle shooting you need a high quality, reliable scope which, unfortunately will be pricey, often shooters spend more on a good scope than they do for the rifle it's mounted on, but a rifle is only as good as it's scope when you are shooting long range.
I use Leupold, but there are a few other makes which are also of high quality.
The biggest problem with the cheaper scopes is not optical quality, it is with the consistency and repeatability of the windage and elevation adjustments.
If you adjust 3 minutes of windage to the right and then adjust 3 minutes to the left to get back to 0 wind, cheaper scopes may not consistently come back to exactly 0 - maybe more, maybe less, and you will not know until your next shot is not where you wanted it to be. Similarly, if you adjust elevation up 26 clicks and then down 26 clicks you may not end at the same elevation as you started with when using a poor quality scope.

Sorry for the long-winded explanation, but I know from other shooters' experience that buying a cheap scope for long range shooting will result in complete frustration and in the long run, a waste of time and money.
Bottom line: buy a high quality scope.

Thanks for the replies guys. The gun that it will be mated to is a Savage 10FPLE in .223. I'm not concerned with knocking out the reticule out, but mostly magnification, clarity, the thickness of the crosshairs and the accuracy of their mil-dots. I should have been more specific in my original post. But please continue with all comments about these scopes.
Thanks in advance,

-Jason

Mueller

Look at Mueller .. I just bought a 8.5 x 25 44mm AO with mildot. Just over $300. Great scope, good clarity all the way out to the edge. Lots of good reviews in the states and here. Worth a look for sure.

I just got a hold of a 10X fixed power mildot Bushnell Elite 3200 for my 223 AR. It has target turrets on it. No range report yet cause Im still waitin on the gun :D . The scope looks really good and for paper and the 223 should be an alright setup.
I agree as I also just picked up a 3200 10x40 for my "Budget Tactical" 700 Remmie in 223:cool:
Great Scopes for what they cost.......I'd take a 3200 over a BSA anyday;)

I have seen the Light -- I mean, the Night...

Just to complicate the discussion, I'll add the following:

A couple days ago, I recieved a package in the mail with something that I've long dreamed of, but never had the means to order (until last week)... a NightForce 5.5-22x56mm in the NXS line.

omfg

Really. It's that good.

As I looked through the thing, I shook my head and could only wonder what the hell I'm supposed to do now with the Elite 3200's, Elite 4200's and Leupold VX-1's and VX-2's that seem to abound in my collection. I really had no idea until now what the view through a scope was supposed to look like.

I'm sure this is, in fact, the road to hell, but I don't care. I have listened to the sirens' call, and I now can see the target. Rather, I can see what the target is thinking. God almighty, I can see the target!!! :)
