Hey Guys,

I recently bought an M48 mauser. I it is in impecable condition. I have only one problem with it. The sights; theyre crap. I have been looking for my scope options and so far all ive been able to come up with is:

1. A special mount that attaches to the barrel.
2. Replace the rear sight and afix a pistol scope
3. Drill and tap the receiver.

My original intention had been to "bubbarize" it. But now that ive got it i cant bring myself to destroy this rifle as it is in such gorgeous condition. Are there any other options out there so that i dont have to replace the bolt handle, cut up the stock or drill the receiver?

Im open to replacing the stock and storing the old one. This would lighten the load somewhat as it's heavy.

Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Sell it and buy something that was designed to use a scope on it.
Or, shoot it alot and get use to the sights.

Not totally sure on the M48 but there are scout mount options for the K98 that are not drill and tap jobs. They would mount/attach to the rear sight and wouldn't be a permanent alteration. Another option is a cantilever mount like these ones for the M48:

Although I no longer own it, I had one M48A converted to a period sniper configuration and it shot really well out to 300 meters.

I have seen some board discussions about sticky bolts, but I never experienced it myself. Perhaps others here that have experienced it, can speak to that issue.

Thanks for the link steve. That is an interesting solution. I didnt know there were cantilevered scope mounts out there for the M48. Im going to look into that option. This way i dont have to destroy it to use it.

Badger that was a nice piece of kit you had there. Where did you get the mounts and scope for the reproduction?

Also i am going to order a skid of igman ammo. But i cannot decide what size of bullets to order. The price is right and it is alot more powerful than the commercially available NA fab'ed stuff. Ive found 170, 180 and 198 grain. Any suggestions which is best?

Your sights are very likely calibrated for a 196grain round so the heaviest option you listed would probably be the best for your POA.
