I am trying to figure out what the best size of scope would be good for my .22WMR.We don't have large wide open spaces in Eastern Ontario,
so ranges will be anywere from 20 yards or so, up to 150-200.
I was looking at a Tasco Varment in 2.5-10x42.
or would i be better suited with a 3-9x40 ?

I’ve just mounted a 3-10 x 40 on my 22WMR and find it works well for shooting out to 100 yards at the range. Personally I didn’t want a scope with a AO but that’s just me...

I have a 3-9x40 on mine. Didn't want to use an AO on this either - seems to be the consensus.

That said, I did put a bigger scope on a 17HMR and DO use AO scopes on varmint rifles - so I'm not totally against AO's.

This one is used for shooting ground hogs and hunting other stuff in the bush - that's why no AO or more magnification.

So, it depends on your particular application. 3-9x40 will do fine for most work with this cartridge.

Good luck - SD

I have been shooting a very long time, and had and have a variety of firearms, but i am new to scopes. I know some basic stuff about them,
but don't laugh when i ask what "AO" means?

Adjustable Objective lens.

When the magnifiaction gets too large parallax isn't maintained easily and the manufactures add a AO to compensate.

I would go with a higher power my self - especially if you are going to be doing any target shooting or longer range hunting. 4-16 or 6-24 would both be good choices. 3-9 just isn't enoguh for me.
