I have an older B@L Scopechief in 3X9 mounted on a 300WM Tikka.
The darn power ring is getting harder and harder to turn in either direction.

Under any other circumstances, I'd take the scope in to Bushnell for servicing but I'm pressed for time, have to leave for moose hunting next week.

Is it advisable to place a dab of lubricant at the edge of the threads, or is it going to damage the internal workings?

Depends on the lub that you use. If its a o-ring friendly lub your probably okay in a pinch. A drop isn't likely to go and damage anything or run down the interior lenses, but if it causes the o-ring to swell up then it maybe even harder to rotate.

I would say its due for a trip to the warranty shop when you get back so find a mild lubricant that has some creep properties. Question is......what is mild enough

Silicone "might" help and not swell/destroy the rubber seal. Keep it off the lens coating though ... if it were mine I would NOT attempt to lube it yourself even with silicon. In all probability the internal "sleeve" that moves the lens to change power is the problem... external lubing will do nothing for this... get it serviced or try to find another Scopechief... they are pretty good value for the money...AP

Guys. This is a used scope which by the sounds of things will be in for service anyway - Bushnell will look after it. About a month ago, I was told there would be a wait of 2-3 months  Value of the scope is minimal and the unit is likely not to be damaged anyway. The Silicon grease or lube sounded like a good idea assuming there aren't other chemicals that could be a problem.
