scope question

Have a cz 452 varmint in 22lr am planning to use it 80% target shooting from 50 to 150 yds. thinking about either Nikon prostaff 3-9x40 or bushnell trophy xlt 4-12x40. I want to learn to get as accurate as I can. These are about in my price range could go higher if it was really worth it.

1) are either of these a decent choice
2) how important is it for my type of shooting to have eye reticle focus adj
and objective lens to reticle focus adj
3) should I go with more or less power
4) should I go with more or less obj lens size
5) would you mount directly on the dovetail or go with new rail
6) is it better to more threaded bolts on the ring to base and ring to scope

Lots of discussion a little while ago on this subject. My opinion is that you need mo power for target shooting for a proper sight picture. My Anschutz target gun wears an 8-32 Mueller, gopher hunters range from 3-9 Weaver to V 24 Weaver all with AO. I have one of the Bushy XLT 4-12 AO, seems pretty good. Others will chime in shortly. Opinions are as varied as scope choices.

I would go with more power if you can find one in your price range. My Savage project gun wears a 4-16x Vortex and that is only because I couldn't find the 6-24x I wanted. It is hard to get too much magnification for precision target work at longer ranges. One thing not mentioned is to look for a scope with a 30mm tube diameter. They are brighter than the 1" tubes and offer far more elevation adjustment, which is important with the mortar-like trajectory of .22LR at the longer ranges. I come up ~7MOA from 50yds to 100yds and it only gets worse past 100yds. Most 1" scopes won't offer enough adjustment for that range. Using a 20MOA rail will help some, but there is no substitute for having lots of adjustment built in.

One thing not mentioned is to look for a scope with a 30mm tube diameter. They are brighter than the 1" tubes and offer far more elevation adjustment,

Contrary to what some people believe, all else being equal, a larger main tube, does not transmit more light.

I have the Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 3-9x40 on one of my CZs. Its a great scope for the money but I wouldn't want to use it for any target shooting beyond 75m. The BDC reticle isn't bad but not ideal for target shooting. If you want to shoot 50-150 m target you probably want to look at 6-18 or stronger with a fine duplex reticle or a target dot.
