Never shot a gun with a scope before but looking to get into hunting;

how do I know what optics are good for what? I see like 24x7x300 or whatever, but am going "What does all of that mean?" :confused:

Also, when you sight it in, does the rifle scope automatically compensate for the amount of space it is above the rifle, (i.e if your scope is 6 inches above the barrel, do you try to aim 6 inches higher or if you sight it in properly, is it gonna shoot exactly where you see in the crosshairs? Thanks!

Well - i can guess what you're hunting a bit so i won't ask that question :)

Basically, for your needs you need a good 2-7 power with a 32 or better objective. (2-7x32). The brighter and clearer the better, within reason. You can also use a 3-8x40 (or better) You won't need a lot of magnification - clarity and light transmission is important.

:eek: :eek: :eek: If your scope is six inches above the barrel, what scope you are using will be pretty well irrelevant! :p About 1.5 inches is more like it. (Centre of the scope + height above centre of bore.)

Seriously, though, you will compensate for that when you sight in the rifle. If you have a gunsmith set it up, he will use a boresighter to get it on target, then you'll fine tune it when you get to the range. Or you can boresight at the range by setting the rifle firmly on sandbags and looking through the bore at a clear target at 25 or 50 yards, then adjusting the scope to the same point. It won't be dead on but it should be close (if the scope has been mounted correctly, of course.)

ps... but if you got that .44 mag. Marlin you were asking about a week or so ago, you won't likely be putting a scope on it anyway, right?
