Bit of a noob question, I am looking for a replacement scope rail for my steyr SSG 08 (base 08, not the newer A1 version). Bought the rifle on here in the spring and it came with a customized 20moa scope rail. Looks like one of the previous owners had a wedge of bedding compound added under the rail to make it more like a 50moa rail for long distance shooting.

No stability complaints about the modded rail, except that with the load workup I like and the scope bottomed out I am still 3 mrads high a 100 yards. I am getting into long range shooting with ORA and would really like to be able to zero out the crosshairs at 100 yards so I can build my dope table from a 100 yard zero rather than holding under 3 mrads in the reticle.

Long story short, I would like to buy a replacement 20MOA scope rail for the SSG 08. I am having difficulty determining which rail I should be getting. Seems like google leads me to SSG 69 rails, which do not appear to match the screw pattern of the SSG 08. Anyone out there with Steyr expertise who can point me in the right direction?

Thanks, Hip~!

Why not just try to remove the added bedding compound to return your existing rail to a true 20MOA?

I have an old SSG69 which has a rail mounted on it to allow the use of Pic rings, but the receiver has integral rails on its topside; the Pic rail on (on mine, at least) is contoured to slide over these integral grooves. I'm pretty sure that the 4 screws on top are merely setscrews to lock the two rails together; haven't had the Pic rail off for many, many years. I don't think that the receiver itself has any drilled/tapped holes for other mounts.

I would be very careful to do more research, because I don't believe there is any way the SSG69 rail would fit any other receiver.

Try contacting Nordic Marksman, they are on here, and see if they can get you the rail.

Thanks for the tip, sent Nordic a message on their website.

I want to hang onto the modded rail as is in case I feel like switching back to it in the future. Still new at the long distance shooting game. ORA does shoot out to 1000 yards and I'm not sure if I will need the modded rail to make those shots with the .308

Or you can just get a 20 MOA Spuhr mount and reverse it...

Ummm....what???

Do you mean for him to buy a complete Spuhr mount...for probably several times the cost of any imaginable rail...and then mount it backwards on the rail he already has to negate some of the existing angle?

A gun like this calls for an elegant solution...and that's about as far as you can get from one...:)

I am pretty sure your SSG08 uses the 'SBS' action ('safe bolt system') ... have a look at this page and check the data provided regarding radius of the bridge and receiver and screw spacing .. they compare the 'L' action of the SSG69 and the 'SBS' action of later steyr models

https://www.optics-trade.eu/uk/mak-steel-picatinny-rail-steyr-sbs-308-win-20-moa.html

let us know what you make of the info ... The Steyr M300 that was the basis for the EKO Cobra rifle's was one of the early implementations of the 'SBS' action. The M300 is setup for CISM with irons although this one (https://youtu.be/qQgaTOb3_5w) had an optic mounted.

£85.00 isnt a bad price for what you want.
