Recently picked up a HB .300 win mag, already have a light weight hunting rifle, kind of want this .300 to dual hat as a longer range hunting rig and a long range gong ringer. Looking for scope recommendations budget is around ~1k. Would a Leupold 4.5-14x50 30mm w/CDS be a good option? Or does someone recommend something else?

It depends how you want to shoot. I'd say 20 or 25 magnification for the high side, so for 500-1000m range, of course the 14x would work, but its nice to see a bit smaller scale at distance.

I had a 3-12 power and it was great for clarity (heavy 300WM) but lacking in power, had a less expensive 6-24 power and it was much better for that.

If you plan to bush hunt with it as well, 4-20 (maybe a burris) or 4-24 range would be my recommendation. The USO 8x mag scopes (8x range aka 2.5-20x etc), as well as the 8x range NF scopes are interesting additions, but well over your specified budget. There are a few deals on the EE, a bushnell 3.5-21 DMR would be great if you found a deal on the EE.

Also, there may be something by Athlon that fits the bill, Go Big Tactical on here sells there stuff, as does mystic precision I believe.

Anything in that price category will be lacking in almost all areas, e.g. glass quality, focus, mechanical function, reliability, tracking. If you must stay around 1k, look at an Athlon Midas Tac or something and plan to use holdovers/holdoffs rather than dialing elevation and wind. Most long shots can be made at 16x power so you don't need a 24x power scope. Image quality at 24x on a cheaper scope will not be that good. I have used a Leupold VX2 6-18x40 AO target scope for about 12 years now and I would recommend it, but they are no longer in production.

You are looking at roughly $1125 retail for a VX-3i 4.5-14x50 with a 30mm main tube, side focus, and CDS. This optic is guaranteed for life, with the repair center here in Canada (should you ever need it). Also, this optic is not produced in China, like most all others in this price segment.

POst photos once you scope the rifle!

For a $1k target shooting scope, I’d be looking at a Bushnell elite tactical or a vortex pst gen 1 6-24x. Both can be had in ffp or sfp. Maybe have a look at the sightron line as well. Decent scopes for a good price. No bells and whistles usually, but in my experience, they’re top quality.

Agreed on the Japanese made Bushnells. With the $1K budget, I'd be looking for a clean, used Bushy Elite DMR/DMR2 or try to find a SWFA.

Most of the quality scope manufactures back their products with lifetime warranty now.

Nothing matters more than tracking in a LR scope. All the fancy bells & whistles, and über-glass don't amount to anything, if the scope doesn't track.
