Scope recommendations please **narrowed down now, see post #15**

I am a hard-core advocate of good glass. You will never regret investing in good optics.

NF is superlative. Leupold is a close second (and excellent warranty) but personally, for my hunting rifles, I need to mix quality with utility. In other words, I want something i am not afraid to abuse.

I use a Bushnell elite 3-9 on my 338 and 30-06 and I could not be happier. I keep them on the lowest power and they perform very well.

I suspect Sightron would be an excellent alternative. They make great target scopes at a good price. Check with Peter Dobson and seew hat he recommends. He is a straight-shooter and will not feed you BS.

Out of your choices I think it's worth going to the VX3. I will say that yes Leupold has a good warrenty. I have broken the erector assembly in the same VXII 3 times, and they keep fixing it, usually it's back within 2 weeks. But how many bushnells have had to use the warrenty?

I have 3 bushnell's a 3200 3-9, a 4200 2.5-10, and a 4200 6-24 tactical. The optics of the 2.5-10 are pretty nice, they are the equal of my VXIII 4.5-14, and a step ahead of the two VXII I have. The 2.5-10 has been on a 300 rum for at least 500 rounds, and was on a 300 wsm before that. I also think it is a brighter scope than my VXIII. I would have no hesitation buying another 4200 2.5-10.

But if you have the cash, a NF 2.5-10 would be a very nice piece of glass.

I started upgrading my Bushnell scopes to Leupold 8 years ago. Now I have more Leupolds than Bushnells. The transition has not been completed as yet.

They are both good scopes and I have never used warranty service from either companies. Not entirely correct, I asked Bushnell to clean up one of 30 year old scopes once. Bushnell gives you best bang for the buck and I like the RainGuard feature. Leupold scopes are clearer and have more features.

My advice to you is to buy the scope you like and can afford. Don’t hold back on your expenses. A good scope can last you a life time.

Eye relief. It seems that with the low-quality scopes I own now, I'm always backing off/re-adjusting my head to get a clear view. It's a bloody pain in the butt and the kinda thing that'd prolly muck up a quick shot for me. Is this "finickiness" due to the variable mag setting being cranked up, or is it simply a question of quality? Does a larger bell at the shooting end of a scope help in this respect? I was thinking of a 42-50mm...

You should be aware that Leupold sells variable scopes whose eye varies considerably as you adjust the magnification. You may find that you have to move your head back and forth as you change the magnification.I sold a VXIII 6.5-20x40 for that reason, and I will soon be selling my VXII 4-12x40 for the same reason.Scopes like the Zeiss Conquest don't have such issues, because of their constant eye relief.

Well, it's settled. VX-3 in a 3.5-10 x 40. Thanks to all for your input, suggestions, criticisms and opinions. I've learned about scopes thanks to your responses ;).

I'll drop a line after I've mounted the scope on my 7mm Mag beast and get back to y'all with my initial impressions.
