Scope reticle issues

Looking through my scope, if I move my head side-side or up-down, my reticle changes point of impact. Is this normal? Is this perhaps a quirk of a first-focal-plane reticle? This phenomenon seems to happen on low magnification more so than higher power.

I can remember asking this question a few years ago, when I first joined CGN. I think it has something to do with paralax ,
What scope are you using?

Yup. Parallax. Are you able to adjust it?
If so move you head up and down while adjusting until the reticle appears to stop moving in relation to the target.

I asked a a FFP vs SFP question in January I believe. Paralax is set to lowest setting, but I'm also looking at a wall that is only 10 feet away. So I will try in the daylight tomorrow at a proper range to see if issue persists.

As a side note, don't trust a gunsmith to mount your scope properly. Threw a level on mine today, and it was noticeably canted.

It's definitely parallax, if it's not adjustable then it's most likely set at 100 yards / meters. Most will only adjust down to 25 if it is adjustable, some will go lower, but it's not common.

Some scopes designed for close range can adjust the parallax down to 10 meters... 33 feet... for airgun competitions.

Nothing adjusts down to 10 feet..

There is a way to eliminate parallax at all distances. Position your head at a point back from the scope where you start losing the picture around the edge. This shows up as a black ring around the perimeter. For every shot, ensure that this ring is an even thickness all the way around.

This technique will keep your eye optically centered with your scope, regardless of its parallax setting. It is a ninja secret that I'm sharing with you at great risk.

Using this technique every time will make for more accurate shooting. As a bonus, it'll keep you from cutting a nice smiley face in your eyebrow.
