Hi gang. I have had a the 45-70 for a few years and really love it and have taken a few bears with her but as I get later on into my 40s my eyes ain't what they used to be so I picked up a VX3 1-5x 20 and was wondering what would be recommended for scope rings.
I want to keep the scope as low as possible and the rings that came with the Ruger seem quite high, they have a #5 stamped on them and they are not very attractive lol. What would be a good fit for this rifle and scope combo.?

Thanks gang.

I have #4 rings on my 45-70, and for comparison #3's on my 9.3x74R -

Depends on your hold for eye relief... a pair of 3B's will get the scope down considerably, but for some the offset 4BO rings are required... the offset rings only come in the #4 height. Snapshots will have either in stock... call; 1-450-427-0052 ask for Carole or Michael.

Thanks guys. Slamfire , those are beautiful rifles and I really like the profile on the 9.3.

Hoyt. Are those ruger ring sizes you are quoting or are they leupold.?

Thank you both for the help.

They are Ruger ring sizes... the come in 3 (low), 4 (Medium), 5 (high), 6 (xtra high). The "B" stands for blued, "K" is bright stainless, "H" is Hawkeye, "M" is matte finish. Just a note... there is only one mounting system, even thought it may say "H" for Hawkeye, the ring will fit any Ruger receiver.

You can see the 4BO offset ring in the rear position on the rifles below;

Warne makes a beautiful set of quick detach rings......that way you can revert back to open sights if you get into the thick stuff at close range. Canada Ammo had them in stock. They are a very nice fit. I got the med and they look really good on my 77/44. I might just have to get a set for my No.1 in 45-70

Can you get them in 30mm? What size objective does your scope have?

There are other aftermarket rings other than Warne... Leupold makes a ring also, but I don't like the single screw per side... I have tried them all... nothing works as well or looks as good as Ruger original factory rings... the Warne rings are blocky, the QD levers grab brush and clothes... the reason I put them on the rifles was for quick use of the irons...in four years with them on two rifles (No.1-S 45/70, No.1-A 30/30) I never once removed the scope and realized that I never would... plus, if you just gotta remove the scope, I have done testing at the range and a wide mouth stubby flat head screwdriver will remove the scope almost as fast with Ruger rings... and POI didn't shift more than an inch @ 100 on reinstallation... for me, Ruger factory rings are the way to go.

^ This, definitely! The Ruger rings return to zero so well that for use as an emergency-scope-remove set-up they're close to perfect. No snagging protrusions on them, and removal is easy even if you have only a coin, or even the spine of a knife, to use as a screwdriver. At one time I thought about how great it would be to switch back and forth between irons and scope...but in reality, the only reason I would consider removing a scope nowadays is if it suddenly crapped out one me and I needed the irons as a back-up. In that case, who cares how well the return-to-zero is? The scope is pooched! :)

If you are still anal enough to have a second pre-sighted-in scope in a second set of rings back at camp, ready to install (holds hand up...:)), fine; put it on back at camp, take a couple shots to fine tune the zero, and you're set.

Just put a call in to Snapshots and left a message hoping to hear back from them tomorrow and I will order a set of Ruger 3 rings and hopefully they have them in Stock. Thanks again Nuttz.

Thanks again Nutz. I ordered a set of #3 rings from Snapshots. Not cheap at $50 bucks per ring but it should work out fine. Will post pics when I got her all mounted up.

Got the rings.

Got the rings today from Snapshots and I am more than pleased with the rings and the profile with the #3 rings and the scope combo. I took a pic but for the life of me can't seem to post the pic from my tablet. Any way it is a great set up and a big thanks to the folks who helped me out.
I can email someone the pic if they would be so kind as to post it for me. Lol.

I'm running the original vertically split ruger rings on my 45-70 and like them. I recently discovered what I feel was the ###iest of all ruger rings only to find out the company quit making them 10years ago due to lack of interest.... :(
