Scope rings for a Remington Nylon 66?

Can anyone recommend what kind of rings I should get for my Nylon 66? A friend wants me to go target and silhouette shooting with him and this is the only .22 rifle I have. I have an old 1" 3X-9X scope I can use. The Nylon 66 probably wasn't intended for this purpose but just want to know if it's even possible and what type and size (low, med, or high) of rings to get.
Thanks

I think a medium set of rings for dovetail would do. I think you might be a bit disappointed with scoping the 66, the receiver cover tends to move and the POI changes after every shot. It's a great reliable plinker but my advice would be to pick up an old bolt action (cooey, mossberg etc) and scope that.

Thanks. I'll look around for something that's more suitable. I think it would drive me crazy having the POI change after every shot.

Something else - the rail on the receiver cover is formed in the sheet metal. Not all 3/8" tip-off rings will lock securely to the grooves.

never had that problem- had a nylon 66 since 1970 - had thousands of rounds through it- got one of those funny mounted bushnell 4xs( 4x22 or something- the one that required the special hex key) - is it possible the holes that made with the receiver cover might have elongated or something to loosen the fit between the body and cover- or maybe someone didn't use the right screws? maybe a small diameter washer or lockwasher to take up the slop in the screw?- like i said, never had that problem, first i heard of it

Thanks for the responses. I think I'll try to scope the 66 and see how it works. At the very least, it will give me some time on the range with a friend and I can still research finding a rifle more suited for this type of shooting.

while it's not a keyhole shooter, it does minute of gopher at 50 yards all day long- when the nylon 66 was first introduced , remington did a bunch of tests to prove to the public just how smooth and accurate it was- mind you these were new, factory fresh guns, not the wash-outs we're seeing today- one inviolved shooting a bullet at a knifeblade and splitting the bullet longitudinally( big word - it means lengthwise_ and recovering the pieces- the bullet was split in precisely 2 equal pieces and then there was the "torture test' where they had balsa blocks thrown in the air like clay pidgeons and shot- try 5000 blocks, never missed a beat- used 2 nylon 66s took 5 days to do it- which speaks volumes for the rifle by itself

Thanks for supplying the barrel code links. My Nylon 66 has a "DY" code, so is from Sept. 1974. Serial #241###X
Great rifle but I wish you guys hadn't implanted the idea of busting all those balsa wood blocks. Now I have to figure out a place where I can try that. It's like Leon Measures' "Shoot Where You Look", but using .22 LR instead of BB's.

mine's 2303###- got it at k-mart - think it was 69.95- brother got a cooey 64/lakefeild /mossberg at roughly the same time-

sidney - I'd like to thank you as well for the link to the barrel codes. I have an immaculate (put hang tags on it and it would pass for new) Remington Model 48 16ga. skeet gun. Vent rib, 2 beads. Barrel code is YY, 1952. Its older than I thought.

you need 2 nylon 66's and about 4 or 5 friends with nothing to do for 4-5 days- also where would you get a controlled environment- remember a 22 rim goes for about a mile before it runs out of poop- these guys were employees of remington labs at the time and were PAID to do this- and balsa wood isn't cheap , nor would it fit in a thrower- this was similar to what the trick shooters at the county fairs would do back before the turn of the century, before we had to be concious of backstops

It's rumored that during the "Bay Of Pigs Invasion" they used Nylon 66's,also some say today some Navy Seals use them.I know many fishermen have them in boats and people in Alaska and North Pole use them because they don't freeze or jam due to the absence of oil/lube which acts like molasses in cold weather.

To bad Remington no longer has the buy two Remington chainsaws and get one free Nylon 66 rifle.:D

hmmm,i have a nylon 66 that was beat to hell and back when i got it and it has a scope mounted on it(scope's worth more then the rifle, lol),the POI does not change at all.with that said the accuracy is pretty good for this abused little rimfire

that there is my set-up exactly, cept i still have my dust covers and i've slotted the scope bolts-

So it sounds like there's still hope for decent accuracy from my Nylon 66. I'm looking for a base and rings for it now. I have a 3X-9X scope with a 1" column. I have been told that you need to get .22/airgun tip off rings. Can anyone tell me exactly what rings/bases to get for my scope?
Thanks

1- you don't need a base- the rings you need are ordinary tip offs and they clamp directly to that groove in the centre of the receiver cover- just ask for 1 inch tip off like burris 57555,b-square 1 inch, bushnell 76-3022, lynx 216615, leu54289- almost anything that fits to a 3/8ths rail- depending on where you are, the guys in vic should have a set or you might have to go to the mainland- dennis ( guntech ) is over there somewhere too - he might have a set

Have you guys with these nylons scoped ever try to shoot groups with them?I'd be amazed if you could shoot 1" at 50 yrds. Like I said, mine was all over the place, probably 2 or 3 that would be fairly tight and the next 2 would be all over the paper. If I tried to tighten down the screws on the receiver cover, it would put too much pressure on the receiver and the bolt wouldn't cycle properly. If you don't have this problem then you are lucky. This is a common problem with these, do a search on rimfirecentral.

No, I don't need a picture. If you say you can, then you can. I just know that I couldn't and many folks on rimfirecentral have the same issue. Enjoy!
