I have a Savage 10 FCP-SR arriving in the mail next week. I already have a Bushnell 10x40 to go on it, and in the intervening time I'd like to pick up some rings to hold the two together. Does anyone know how low I can go? The FCP-SR has a rail on it already, and the 10x40 isn't a very big scope....so might Leupold "low" rings (for example) do me? Or are medium height rings required?

Thanks.

Not sure if this will help, but thought I'd offer my .02 cents and let you know what I did with my Savage.

I elected to remove the factory rail from my Savage 10 and install a 20 MOA rail. I have a NF 5.5-22 X 56 scope mounted in a set of NF medium rings which provides approximately 1/8" clearance between the top of the barrel and OD of the objective lens.

Using the above info. I would suspect your 40mm objective will easily clear the barrel using low or medium rings.
However, the alignment of your eye to the scope eye piece, combined with your cheek against the stock usually dictate if low, or medium rings will be required for good fitment for you.

I had medium height rings when my Savage was a stock rifle for my Bushnell with 50mm objective lens, so I think you should be okay for clearance, Clarence! Cheek weld and position will have to be assessed by you to see if you feel like it's right, like blackacres pointed out. I was using Burris rings at the time. Now the rifle is all custom, and I'm using TPS high rings, with a 56mm Nightforce NXS. I needed the taller rings when I went to the larger objective.

May I suggest you consider a one piece leupold windage base and burris posi zee rings with inserts. I find that my savages have considerable windage adjustment requirements, 10min or more at times. It is a bit of a crap shoot with factory gear. Having the ability to 0 in your windage allows for your optics to perform at their maximum potential. My 2c.

I appreciate the suggestions. The stock comb on this Savage looks lower than some of my other rifles, so I guess I have been assuming that it's "the lower the better" from a fit point of view. As you (all) pointed out, the proof will be in the pudding after I get behind it a few times.

Since it sounds like others have had success with much larger scopes in medium rings, I suspect I'm ok with low rings. It'll give me a place to start, anyway.

Thanks.

Here's a picture that might help. Rifle is a model 12 with a Weaver 0 moa base and Leupold PRW low rings. Also, it is a Bushnell 10x40 as well. The cheek weld with this setup was fine for me.

I have the same savage model 12 vlp with the same bushnell tactical 10x40 as pictured above mounted with leupold STD 2 piece bases and STD low rings. It leaves just enough room to slide on the butler creek flip-up.
