Alright so I have a bit of a pickle here, I have an m1a and im trying to mount a scope on her. shes got a utg tri rail on and a smaller rail that fits into the dove tail. Im not sure if they are lined up but i think they are pretty close. i know thats important but i figured id get some of the bigger questions out of the way first.
first things first i had some scope rings (one inch high i think) on it but they werent tall enough and the front part of the scope was making contact with the rail causing the front end of the scope to be pointed to the sky. it wasnt very noticeable which leads me to believe that a set of scope rings one size larger would do.

i also dont really know much about my scope, i think its a bushnell legend. and i know even less about scope rings, im not even sure if they were one inch high or if thats even a size. i just have a vague memory of the gun smith saying what size they were when i brought the gun in to the store near my house a few months ago. he said he would order me a set and call me when they were in and i never heard anything and infact this is the third seperate time that gun shop has done that so ive decided to order it myself but i thought i would ask you guys first.

so my question is what size scope rings should i be looking for?

One of these? http://www.botachtactical.com/utgm14trirail.html

By far the most common sizes of rings are 1" and 30mm. This refers to the diameter of the scope body.

Scope rings come in different heights. There isn't a particularly good system here; they're usually called "low", "medium", "high", etc.

That mount will need relatively high rings (as you've discovered), because it is long enough that the rail continues under the scope's front bell. You'll need to line up your eye in the centre of the scope, hopefully you'll find a workable cheek position on your stock that will let you do this.

See if you can measure what you now have, and determine how much higher your rings will have to be. You don't need a lot of clearance between the scope bell and the rail (or other rifle parts), but it must not touch.

I don't know that we already know that you need "medium" rings... do we?

Measuring your scope and posting the dimensions will help people make recommendations. What is needed is the diameter of the bell (front), and the diameter of the main tube (1" or 30mm").

I have been quite happy with Leupold "QR-W" rings. The "W" means "Weaver" (which is the rail style that you have; the other main system is "Redfield", which does not use a rail but has a "turn-in" front mount and a "windage adjustable" rear mount). The Leup. QR-W are "quick release" (there's a lever that you can use your thumb to attach and detach the scope)
