I'm looking to purchase a scope for my AR180, which I intend to use on targets up to a maximum range of about 500 metres.
I'm trying to determine which model to chose from, and which features.

Should I be looking for a fixed mag optic, or a variable? If variable, then what max magnification should I look for? If fixed, what do I need, 6X ?? More ??

I am looking for something thats rather rugged and weather proof, as it will be used in the rain.

Suggestions?
Thoughts?

Got one for sale?? LOL ;) :D

I use a Leupold Mk4 1.5-5x20 MR/T on my Swiss Arms Carbine. It works really well and comes with a BDC for 62 grain ball and illuminated reticle. I've shot it out to 400 on that rifle, but I don't think 500 would be an issue. Unless you're going for gophers. It'll run you about 1100 bucks though. A Vari-X III version is available without the BDC but still with illuminated reticle. Not sure on the price. The one version of this that I've seen had a Circle Dot in it. Talking to Phil at P and D, he figured that it had to be a custom reticle, as he was not aware of circle dot being available in the Vari-X III line.

First off, how much are you looking to spend?

Well, I'm not really asking about "quality" at this point, I'm more interested in what particular features I should be looking for. i.e. zoom or fixed magnification, size of objective lens etc...

Teddy49, that sounds like a nice scope, so, that's 1.5-5 X mag with a 20mm lens? Correct?

You got a nice gun... might just as well get a nice scope!

The best bang for the buck as to be the Bushnell Elite 3200 Tactical 10x... at a little over $200, you can't really beat it.

If you have little more $$ available, have look at the Leupold line. Personnaly, I like their 3.5x10.

What size target are you looking to engage?

Thanks for that info. Someone else mentioned the Bushnell to me today as well. I'll have to check on that.

Targets are most likely to be military types figure 11's etc. So, decent size. Probably not going to do much at the 500m mark as thats pushing it for the rifle.
