After selling my CZ Varmint in 17 Hornet I picked up the same rifle in an American. Am looking for scope options without breaking the bank. Think something in 4-16 or 6-18x no larger than 44. But looking for fine crosshairs or target dot. Primary purpose is gophers say within 200 yards.

Looking for suggestions. Thoughts please?

I think good parallax adjustment is a must for a rimfire scope. That's why I settled on the Bushnell Engage 3-12x44. I found it was the most affordable option with adjustable parallax down to about 10 yards. It's not perfect though, I'm not a fan of the reticle. I wish it was a simple duplex or something similar. Bushnell also makes the Nitro with all the same features and available with their Milti-X reticle. I will probably upgrade to that when they become easier to find.

^well, 17 Hornet isn't a rimfire ^ for starters, but, I like AO or side-focus on all my scopes. Including my CZ 527 Varmint in 17 Hornet. :) For me, when budget is tight...I turn to the older/glossy Bushnell Banners with AO. If I was home, I'd throw a photo up...but to me, they're good value, have AO, glass is very decent, and I trust them completely with varmint calibers down to rimfire. BOTH my 17 Hornet and 17HMR have these scopes, the Hornet a 6-20X AO. It's this vintage you want to search for, but this particular scope doesn't have AO. The one pictured on the side of the box looks like both of the ones I have, but in the past...I've also had a 4-12X AO. In all cases, standard duplex reticles..which aren't my first choice.

For dot reticles~there is a Nikon Prostaff model (discontinued?) that is a 4.5-18, dot reticle, 1/8" adjustments. I have a WTB ad up for one now, hoping Santa leaves me a little $ in case I get a hit on that one. lol

Ah brother this 17 hornet talk makes me wish I’d never sold mine. I never even fired it. Leupolds are mice and light. I’d slap a lightweight on that americano

Then you'll love hearing it's become one of my favorite rifles/calibers. :) It's a bit odd how well it fits the jobs I need it too. I mean, my .223 does too of course..but the 17 Hornet is an instant sleeping pill on a 200 yard groundhog (I mean, even big ones), crows and pigeons are not fans of the 20gr. V-Max bullets I load it with, and it SEEMS about 1/3 as loud as the .223. More like a slightly louder 17HMR, zero recoil, perfect results=all good. After I got mine and took it groundhog hunting...my .223 hasn't been touched once. Save for a coyote outing, didn't even pull the trigger that day.

Lol don’t make me look for another one. I like my 223’s a lot but I’m sure the quieter hornet would be ideal and still
Has good power on small critters by what your saying. Geesh Marie! Why?!?! Lol

Mike resistance is futile. It just makes no sense.

You need at least one of each but two is better: 17 HM2, HMR, WSM, Hornet and Fireball. Then 22 Hornet, 204, 223 and 22-250. That’s just the beginning. Did I say multiples of each is better?

Ask me how I know. But please don’t ask my wife

22LR I just happen to have an old Bushnell as you described sitting in a drawer. It’s a Banner 4-12x40 Japan that sat of my 22-250 for years. I may have to try it out. I also have a new in box Legend Ultra? 4-14x44 SF. I bought 2 when Bushnell had their annual 30 % off.

But for some reason want to try fine cross hairs and a target dot. I have a Weaver 36T but too much for what I want.

Decisions or is it indecisions ?

If the Banner has AO, I'd say try it out...and get shooting! Not that I'm recommending it for a 17 Hornet, but my .223 wears a Sightron SIII with their MOA-2 reticle. A fine duplex style, but where the reticles meet, there is a dot instead. (non-illuminated) If I could swing one of those Nikons with the dot reticle right now...I'd be going that route. For now, my Hornet wears the Banner. It's just doing too good a job for me to feel any desire to upgrade.

Nicely done .22

17 Hornet has quickly become my caliber of choice for gophers. I am in the midst of loading up last years empty brass. Must have done some shooting as I have close to 400 that need filling!

I sold my CZ Varmint and replaced it with the American which has yet to be shot. Been too sick but getting better now. I also have a Savage Model 25 Walking Varminter (black synthetic).
