The rifle: Axis 308HB
Purpose: Shooting up to 600 yards (and hitting the target)

IMO, a used Vortex PST 2.5-10 or 4-16 would serve you well. You'll see many on the EE for $700- $800.

You'll end up with a decent optic and transferable warranty.

Prophet River has some nikons on sale. You might find a suitable candidate there.

Is this for hunting or target shooting?

For hunting you generally want a simpler reticle and capped knobs. Most hunters don't mess with the windage turret after zeroing, and may or may not mess with the elevation turret. The simpler reticle is easier to see in dim light against vegetation. A lighter scope is less weight to carry around.

Target shooting is a different ballgame. Weight is basically immaterial, target/tactical turrets are more common, much higher magnification can be used, and more complicated reticles may be useful.

I'll second a used PST 4-16 if you're willing to go the used route.

Vortex would be what Id look at in that price. For a few more bills the Bushnell LRHS series is awesome if you can find a used one.

Good clear scope, adjustment range is only 40" total though, so you might want to look into a 10-20moa base for the Axis.
