The BDC reticle has its advantages. Takes a lot of the guesswork out of hold-over estimation. Using their SpotOn Ballistic Match Technology online calculator you can calibrate the reticle for whatever load, and the reticle subtensions can be used as a range finder.
Cabelas 4-16x FFP covenant, great past 500, good eye relief not heavy for the size and well in budget at full price or even on sale as they are now. I have two of them, one on XCR and one on TC / Dimension in multi-cal including 300 winmag.
Yesterday i picked up a nikon monarch 3 2.5-10x42 with the Sako A7 RoughTec Pro. Looks like its going to be a sweet set-up. I spent an hour looking thru different scopes and it was between the Vortex Viper 4-12 x 42 and the Nikon Monarch 3 2.5-10x42. I liked the redical of the Viper better then the Monarch (not a fan of the BDC at all!!) actually bought the Viper first but returned it for the lower powered Monarch because I do hunt in some dense areas.
On a side note:
I have an app on my iPhone called iSnipe, its the same as the Nikon "Spot-on" site
Im sure its similar but nikons app is calibrated for their own reticles. Its quite a nice app. Even tells you what the individual bdc drop will be at different power and gives you a field chart as well.
