I have a Cooper model 52 Jackson Game in 280AI on order and am looking for a scope to match.

I hope to use this on a western hunt some day or if I ever go to Quebec for a caribou hunt.

I currently have a Zeiss 3-9x 40mm on my Win 70 fat 30-06. I was thinking of the new Zeiss 2-10x or the 3-9x again (lovely scope) but with thr Z600 reticle.

I may never shoot beyond 300m but would like the capability to anyway. Hard to imagine I'd go beyond 400m even with a lot of practice.

I'd appreciate some opinions on what kind of magnification is welcome for Elk or Caribou hunting.

Leica ER 2.5-10x42 would be the way I'd go. If you want to spend less, then the Leupold VX-6 2-12x42; if you want to spend more, then the new Zeiss Victory HT 2.5-10x50.

Re Magnification

I own a Cooper too, and I feel it's only right with a Leopold. You know the Made in America thing! I'm not saying they are better, just keep it a Purebred. Respectfully Jim. As for Magnification 31/2 x10 or 4x12

We went with the Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 riflescopes, the scopes are going on our Cooper Model 54's when they arrive. 243 for her, 308 for me...

Cheers
Jay
P.S. The Zeiss are 'Assembled in the USA'... At least the Conquests we got were!

Leupold scopes are assembled in America, just like the Zeiss Conquest, as well as some Swarovski scopes..

Nice rifle you ordered, I think youll be happy with it! I dont think you could go wrong with either choice. I have 3 coopers, 2 wear leupold VX3 and 1 has a conquest. I would try and snag a deal on one of the conquests on sale if It were me.

I just got a Cooper 54 in .308 a couple of weeks ago and put a Leupold vari lll 3-9 x 40 with the CDS dial and think thats a good match. Also bought a nice Cooper leather sling that is beautiful. I have a Sauer 202 that I put a Zeiss 3-9 x 40 on, just seems to go together. But get what you like, it's your rifle. Cheers Roscoe

Another Leupold fan !

I'm partial to the clean, unobstructed features of the VX-II, and have several
of them, primarily in 1-4 and 2-7 on hunting rifles, in QR rings and bases.
Small, light & compact. They match well with the Coopers classic looks.

For you Zeiss fans, I was told once this supply dries up, the next batch will be
made/assembled in China.
Not sure if this is a good thing or not?

My view is that it is never a good thing to move production to China...

I'll take my optics built somewhere other than China thank you very much! If I don't get a Conquest 3-9x and wait it out till my rifle gets in, I'm thinking the 2-10x 42mm sounds great; at a premium price though.

One thing I don't like about the Zeiss I have is I can't adjust the turrets and return to a preset setting. I have to remember which direction I moved them and remember to return them. I think the HD5 has this feature. Although with a ballistic reticle it may not be that necessary.

I've got a 3.5-10 VX-3 with CDS on my 30-06 Classic, and am planning on the same thing in 4.5-14 on the Western Classic 7mm STW that is supposed to be here this month. I could go either way on a 280 AI.

My 700 Remington BDL SS in 280 Remington is wearing the Leupold VX-6 2 - 12 x 42.
It will eventually have the CDS prepared by Leupold.
While you may have a little more velocity that mine, the current load is 59 grains of IMR7828SSC with a 160 grain Speer GS.
Nosler uses 59 grains with the 150 grain bullet but lists 61.5 for your AI giving you about 200 fps more than my load chronographs.
you should be able to pick up a VX-6 for about half the value of your rifle. Good Luck
