One scope manufacturer's advertising states that its hydrophobic coating keeps the scope clear of water droplets even in the rain. This sounds much like commercial products such as Rain-X used for windshields etc. Has anyone ever tried using rain-x or something similar on their scopes or have any thoughts on the matter - eg: the possibility of rain-x damaging the other coatings on the scope. I've never used a scope in the rain (hardly ever used one at all) so I've no idea if rain on the lens really is, could be, a problem.

DON'T!!!

It's like using it on your glasses - it negatively interacts with the coatings used to give clarity. Unlike your car window, your scope optics aren't just 'glass'. Perhaps some of the new coatings aren't affected, but i'd hate like hell to waste a scope finding out.

There are some good anti-rain anti-fog solutions out there. Stick with stuff meant for eyewear and the like and you'll be better off.
