Hi Folks,

Love the Mosin, cheap accurate and packs a punch. Went looking for scope options and found out that there is a dovetail rail on the thing if you remove the rear iron site! So the question is:

Has anyone scoped their Mosin with a long eye relief scope on the natural dovetail, and how do you like it? Advice?

Thanks!

I am about to start my Mosin addiction (thanks to the EE!)

Here is what I have learned. (Others please chime in if I'm missing something)
It depends on whether you want to:

1. Have the scope set up over top of the bolt and in line with the mag. Most people have the bolt bent to clear the scope and drill/tap mount screws into the side of the receiver (PU style)

2. Scout scope mount by either using the rear sight dovetail or
3. Scout scope using a Brass Stacker mount which allows the rear sight to remain.

Decent red dots/Pistol scopes are not cheap!

I have, takes a bit to get it centered. Because when I measured it was between 11-12mm... But I ordered 3/8 to 20mm low profile dovetail mounts that be like making the dovetail weaver. I currently got a 91/59 with a reddot using said dovetail.

I tried alot of higher 3/8 to weaver adapters. But found made the scope too high... But LOTS of people uses this method. Much better then relying on a pin that might not be lined up.

Ati has a receiver mounted scope mounted. Pain to get centered if you don't have a proper vise, I had to weld the holes close and re drill. But once done it looks and feels very good for 65 bucks.

I tried to do this and failed miserably. it worked and stayed on target for about 3 shots but then it started to move, I did have rather cheap rings but I imagine that it would happen to higher end ones as well. I would recommend bringing it to a smith to get a mount installed over the bolt and use a non-LER scope

I won't be able to say much about it until the spring when I can get out and test it (plan on installing it over the winter), but I managed to get the Brass Stacker M44/M38 "Scout Mount" rail up for my M38.

It's a little high, but with low rings it will put the centre of the reticle no further from centre of bore than any scope mounting system on a gas operated gun where the piston/gas block is above the barrel (I'm looking at all you Darth Vader gun guys), so it shouldn't be too bad.

My thinking behind going this route is that it leaves the rear sight in place as a BUI, and it's a matter of kncoking out a couple of pins and replacing them with bolts to hold the rail, ergo, easy to undo and return the rifle to stock if it doesn't work out.

This is from their site, not to advertise for them or anything. Not always easy to get their products north of the border:
