I have been thinking about getting a scoped Milsurp. Naturally, I am leaning toward a Mosin Nagant sniper. I know nothing of these rifles, what exactly should I look for besides a nice bore? What is good ammunition for those? Any info would be great!

To get the best performance from ANY rifle, you must handload. That simple, Friend.

Over the years, I have discovered that your most accurate load generally will be somewhere around 10% UNDER military MV.

CONSISTENCY in your ammunition is more important than a "pet load". Actions and barrels VIBRATE, TURN, TWIST and WAVE when you squeeze that trigger. By making your ammunition as perfectly CONSISTENT as possible, you are forcing all of that VIBRATION, TURNING, TWISTING and WAVING to be exactly the same every shot. That means that the rifle then will have a very strong tendency to throw all those slugs to the SAME point.

Good luck!

Don't forget you can pick up a scoped SVT-40 for about the same price as a scoped Mosin.

With the right loads, bedding, etc, a Mosin will be more accurate, but not by as much as you might think. The biggest factors working against SVT accuracy are around the bedding of the action, and they can be made to be quite accurate. As well as being semi-auto, mag fed, and the same hard hitting round as the Mosin.

I will keep that in mind ! I am not to too concerned about accuracy.. I just don't have any scoped Milsurps.. and a No4 Sniper is out of reach for the time being. I was thinking of a more affordable introduction :)

You could also go "full retard" like I did with Lyudmilla here, because.... Well hell, why not?

Is it just me, or does that scope look really far back?

Kinda would... It has the rubber eye-cup extension on it, you actually place your face directly against it. Freaky as heck when I first tried it, because, well, the SVT kicks, and having my eye socket pressed up against something directly attached to the scope/rifle is generally not where I'd want it.

The first few rounds downrange were... Disconcerting. After that I got used to it. The rubber is quite soft, and though you do feel it putting pressure against your face during the recoil impulse, it isn't bad. Also, I can see the logic of it now. You never have to think about your eye relief. Just get the rifle up and put your face to the scope untill it touchees the rubber. You're lined up first time, every time.

I did a full review on the rail itself. It's very much a solid piece of kit.

I would lean towards a scoped 1903 Springfield.
Ammo reloading stuff is very readily available in North America and relatively cheap.
Uses standard .308 projectiles, brass is very common as well as good IMR 4895.
Rifle is deadly accurate as long as the bore is strong.
I'm about to get set up to reload .30-06 for my 1903A3 however I find it way more fun with the irons vice a scope
Until my eyes get too old anyway lol

I've got a scoped K31, and a dioptre-d K31. In fact, thanks to the supreme accuracy of the 'fit' of the Swiss Products mounts, it's the same gun. My scope is an old K4 El Paso-made Weaver - I reckon that is suits the gun better than a modern device, being ony a x4.

Is that the scope mount available from TradeEx? My k31 groups great, the only open sight rifle I can get under 3" at 100M... But it requires me setting the sights at 300M, otherwise it hits a foot and a half low. I would like to put something with a .308 or 54R ranging reticle on it.

You must be lining the top of the front post up with the bottom of the U notch. Your meant to line up the front post with the top of the U notch, that will get you bang on at 100M.

Err... no... I've been shooting open sights for 35+ years... I am aware how to line up the sights.

I love the 1903 Springfield! It's got a smooth action, easy to reload the mag and smooth cycling of the action when reloading.......some other rifles can't do all of those things I find.

The scope on mine attracts more attention than the gun itself. And compared to optics of today, it's not a very quality piece, but it's fun to shoot and fairly accurate.

My shoulder isn't too impressed with it though. I find that it's a hard kicker, and with the steel butt plate it's not particularly easy on my tissue.

Aye, it's true, it cycles so easily you would swear there was something wrong with it lol
The action is so smooth.
It does kick quite a bit though. I use 150gr if I buy commercial but have fired 180gr and she kicks.
I'm going to start handloading for it using the old M2 ball 150gr recipe. shouldn't kick any worse than a .308 at that point.

I get a nice little bruise going on the shoulder skin whenever I take it out lol I might invest in a rubber pad just to take the edge off the metal plate :D

How does the front of that scope mount to the upper handguard Sir? Did you have to drill through it?

It's not the size of the scope that matters... it's how you use it. LOL

Seriously though, I've NEVER seen such a big scope on a rifle before... well, maybe on Doc Brown's rifle in Back to the Future III !! LOL
