I wasn't sure whether this belongs in gunsmithing, milsurp, or sporting rifles, so I chose this one. I picked up a nice "Sussex" sporter from a fellow gun nut some time ago, and these tired old eyes do better with glass than open sights, so I fabricated a scope mount and put glass on it. I don't know how many of you have scoped Lee Enfields, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who's encountered the problem of cheek weld. As most of you probably know, the sniper variant had a removable cheek piece. Even with a low mount and rings, I still found my head waving in the breeze trying to acquire a decent sight picture. Some time ago, I made a cheek riser, but it wasn't that good, and it didn't allow me to remove the bolt for cleaning. Here's my second solution. I've made this one both removable and adjustable. Where the dowels go into the stock, I have two flush mounted 5/16" grub screws securing it at whatever height I adjust the riser to. I now have perfect eye relief for me, and I'm checking it out at the range this Sunday. If I had to do it again, I'd do an even better job, but it'll do for this fall hunt. If any of you decide to copy this, contact me and I'll tell you what errors and potential solutions I encountered. Any feedback, pro or contra would be welcome.
