Hey Guys,

I just recieved my scope today... and when I went to mount it and bore sight it I had to add some shim's under the rear base. Now is this common to add 3 brass shims 0.005"? would this change anything by adding them? or does the rifle have the wrong base's and rings on it? they are the ones that come with the rifle. It seems to be fine and level as far as I can tell but I thought I'd ask you guys on the Board also:D thanks a bunch.

If you can tell us what action and vintage it would be helpful. On new guns with proper mounts this should not be required.

1) recheck the bases and their positions to ensure they are correct.

2) they should be level and parallel to the bore unless they are sloped (MOA) bases. A straight edge will confirm this.

3) what scope are you using?

Joe

its a Long action Winchester Model 70 XTR .270 and the Scope is a brand new King Optics. I'm thinking it come with the wrong base's and rings, wich are Millet so I was told they are. The rear base has the windage adjustment screws on the rear base.

Shims for me are to make bases level ; IE: if back base is to low and you lay scope into rings if there is space at front off front mount you have to shim till scope is level in both rings, and then lap rings, for proper job.I have lapped many sets of rings for friends and my own and the poorest rings I have found so far are Millets, the best I have ever seen are Hart's 2 oz made to mount right on action with no bases like Talleys. they come with shims if needed.

got it fixed thanks guys ... just took it all apart and redid it all ... No shimms this time. and have lots of adjustment left over woohoo!!
