Well the bug got me again so off to a new gun build. My current project is a long range platform chambered in 260 rem. The thing is that I need a scope that has a eye relief of about 12 inches as it must sit in front of the receiver mounted on a rail machined directly in the barrel blank. Is there sutch a thing? I know it's probably going to be a custom job and I am expecting to have to donate body parts for it ( as long as it's not my trigger finger...). I've been looking at leupold, us optics and nightforce websites but the longuest eye relief is a bout 9 inches in a fixed 6X36 scout scope.

any idea?

Leupold makes extended eye relief units, but they are usually fixed four power. There are some 2.5-8 vx units. For distance they are limited by there small objective size, usually no more than 30mm.

I'm also looking to set up my Garand with a scout style scope on one of those aftermarked front hanguards with a rail. If anyone else out there has any more info that might be useful besides Sosa's (and thanks Sosa), please post. I'd want to be shooting my Garand accurately up to about 300 meters; I'm not a real fan of open sights.

Be very careful what you purchase, do your homework first.

Here is why, the scout scopes typical Leupold/Burris 2.5, and 2 3/4 fixed power, are very well set up for eye relief.
Once one gets into varible power scopes with this long eye relief, with variance in power, along comes variance in eye relief.

It is harder to get a cheekweld that is safe distance away from the ejected rounds, at higher power scope settings, and still maintain a good scope image.

Often, this adjustment in head position,is much more dramatic than conventional rifle scopes.

I think this fact alone prevents Burris/Leupold from making variable power scout scopes. I notice they, both companies make variable power pistol scopes though....
