Hi there,
While I know a few of you might think this is a noob q, never the less, I have not been able to find a clear answer... I have an ar15 m4 (flat top), I want to mount an optical scope on top but have been having a difficult time finding high enough rings so the scope will clear the front sight. I know there has got to be an easy answer, but the people I have asked can't give me one. What am I missing out on??
Also, I am thinking of buying a Russian Kobra scope for that rifle. Does anyone have any experience with this setup?? Will I need some sort of riser to clear the front sights?? Will I need to get an Aimpoint or Eotech instead of the Kobra??
Any input anyone has will be greatly appreciated,
:)

Co-witness, its really not that big a deal at all...

If you're looking for mounts high enough to clear the standard front sight entirely, good luck... thats a crappy idea all around. You want your optics as low as possible.

If you're using a zero magnification scope, you want your "dot" to co-witness or "lower third" co-witness with your sights.

If you're using a magnified optic, you won't even notice the front sight. It'll be there, but you won't mind it at all. If you take a look at where the "sight line" of optics like the CF issue Elcan or the "holy grail" of the S&B short dot is, they aren't "above" the front sight.

A good option is buying a Trijicon ACOG. They're designed to live on top of AR type rifles. They don't use conventional rings. Not cheap, but I've certainly heard that they're a great optic.

Some people buy risers specifically for AR15s also. but as mentioned before, they still tend to let the front irons get into the sight picture.

If you're really against the fixed front sight getting in the line of sight, maybe you should consider trading for a flat top with flip up front iron sights.

As noted, a red dot type sight, with 1X magnification can be used with a fixed front sight...no problems...
If you use a magnified optic, the front sight 'disappears' for all intents and purposes.....
