scopes marketed specifically for rimfire

Is the reason some scopes are marketed specifically for rimfire rifles because these scopes need not withstand the heavier recoil of many centerfire rifles?

I'm starting to think about a scope for my .22 and would rather have something more versatile that could work with some other rifle in the future too.

What other considerations are there other than the scopes ability to handle recoil? (and I suppose the .22 probably isn't going to shoot 1000 meters (for example))
 
Less eye relief might be another area in which some rimfire scopes are deficient. You don't have to use a rimfire scope on a rimfire rifle. An adjustable objective scope will allow you to compensate for close range shooting typical with a rimfire. I'm using a Bushnell 3200 5-15x40 AO scope on a rimfire rifle. It would certainly be suitable for either application.
 
Thanks for the info. I hadn't considered parallax due to where the focal point is set nor eye relief.

I think I'll get something comparable to what you've got Grizzlypeg.

Options are a great thing... but for a ponderer like me, they cause decisions to be long away.
 
Yes, as others have posted the big difference is that the parallax is zeroed at 50 yards instead of the typical 150 or so for a centerfire scope. This really is only an issue for the lower power scopes as they are the ones with fixed parallax and focus. Once you go over 9X most scopes have an adjustable objective. As soon as you have that, then you set the parallax/focus where you want. You just have to watch some centerfire scopes don't adjust focus/parallax close enough for a rimfire. In particular it tends to be the ones with side focus. Some don't go below 50 yards, which makes them no good for 25 yard target shooting or gophers closer in. Most adjustable objective style go down to 10 yards. But it is best to check before you buy.

While the Bushnell 3200 is a nice scope, some may find it a bit expensive for a rimfire. I use a Bushnell Banner 6-18x50 AO, and find it works fine on my .22LR Savage. It adjusts down to 10 yards.

I think my question has been answered. I'll watch for parallax distance specifications and figure out what distance I'll be shooting at most commonly.
