Scopes on lever guns?

Do you owners of lever action rifles prefer a scope or receiver sight on yours?

I've got an old Marlin 336 and I'm not sure what to do.

I put a scope on it, but there's something wrong with the base or mounts or something and no matter what I try it is still shooting high with the scope maxxed out.

I could try a different scope with different mounts I guess, but I had an old Redfield receiver sight kicking around so I put that on. I haven't tried it yet , but there is something cool about a simple iron sight.

I know many here have scopes on theirs. Myself, I prefere levers to be nekked. My Marlin 1895 wears only a Williams front firesight. Years ago I had a scope on my Winnie 94, but soon realized I did not like it.

nekked.

Lever guns should have irons. I personally prefer a good peep sight. My marlin wears a Williams sight. Very accurate and easy to use. As my brother calls them "see the world" sight. You usually aren't using a lever gun past 200 yds and irons are more than adequate for that distance.

Regular iron sites or a nice peep site, but if it must be scoped then I recommend a compact scope.

Nothing more unsightly than a honkin' big scope on a lever gun.

Recently I put a 1x-4x scope on my Marlin 1894C. I'm not convinced it's the best way to go and may switch to apeture sights at some point.

Peep fan. I did like the 1 to 3.5 scoped Marlin 336 I had. If I were expecting a long shot, I'd scope. My only remaining lever is a top-eject 94. I'll never scope that one; I don't like LER scopes much and I hate sidemounts. But for a Savage, Marlin or Browning lever (or of course a Ruger 96 or a Win 88 or a Sako Finnwolf) scopes are fine, provided they don't make the rifle feel too awkward.

Not really

I have a scope on my Browning BLR in 308. The Win model 94 30-30 has iron sights but I switched them out for TroGlo fiber optics to make woods hunting that much easier to see. I liked the TroGlo fiber optics so much I switched the iron sights on my Win 94 AE Trapper 44 Rem Mag as well.

I'd mount a XS aperture sight as first choice, Williams second, and a new aluminum Lyman a distant third choice. Any aperture sight is better than standard irons. Scopes tend to unbalance a lever gun, and for most shooting are not needed.

Some will claim it's some sort of heresy, or blasphemy to scope a lever. Not me - I see better with one and so does everybody else, no matter what they claim. My .444 wears an S&B 1.5-6X42 (yeah, I know -scopes worth twice what the rifle is) and my .45-70 XLR wears a 2 3/4 Widefield. Tried a Williams peep, didn't like it dawn or dusk. My 94 .30-30 is iron sights - it's a top eject anyway - cause I just shoot it when I have it around (it's being converted to a .30-30 A.I.) for the fun of it, don't hunt with it. As your eyes age they tend to lose the light/contrast sensitivity you want to spot and shoot at things and there's no arguing the ability of a scope to draw available light. Cripes, that Schmidt & Bender of mine lets me see in the dark!

I have a scope, a 2.5 Weaver on my Win.94 .356, but all the rest wear, Williams Peeps on the rear and firesight fronts!! I can see myself shooting 200yds or more(if I had too) with the .356 win.

I have a front mounted (LER) 2x on my 94 top eject. Love it and will not go back to irons. Irons are ok in ideal conditions, but aren't worth a crap at dusk and dawn.

lol - To each, their own. The funniest I've heard to date is that putting a scope on a lever gun is like putting roof racks on your Lambourghini.
