Scoping a Garand?

Hey all,
I still ain't done with my rifle choice for deer hunting, but I thinned it down to two contenders. Garand VS. M-14. I know the M-14 can be scoped quite easely, but can the Garand? I know it can be done, but drilling and tapping a mint milsurp ( even a pieces gun ) seems like bad karma to me. So is there someone out there making no-gunsmithing mounts for garands ? And are they capable of good accuracy? ( Had a no-mod scope on my SKS, and could'nt for love or money have it keep zero even for an hour. )

There is a mount that uses the rear sight as a mounting point. I've never used one myself but i know theyre out there.

M1's don't take scopes well. Any scope mount for an M1 has to go on the left side or on the barrel.
A scope won't make any rifle shoot more accurately. They only allow you to see the target better. You don't really need a scope for deer hunting anyway.

Mi Garand and Scopes

I recently rebarreled 2 Garands to 7.62x51. Mounted 2 Leupold scout 2.5 x scopes. My old eyes don't pick up iron sights at 100 meters anymore. Using an amegarange mount, requires no drilling or tapping. I got a new accurate Garand again! The scope is mounted directly over the barrel, not offset like the M1C+D models. PM me if you are interested. Check out www.amegaranges.com.

Altering a milsurp Garand to mount commercial scope would render it to become Bubba. Don't do it.

You can mount scopes on a Garand in either a cantelever or scout method without doing any permanent modifying of the Garand, so you can go back to your original beauty whenever you want. If adding a scope to your Garand means it will get out and hunt for you instead of sitting in the safe, then go for it!

scope

I have an amega ranges scout mount and a leupy 2x. i have tried it on 2 of my garands and they both shot amazing groups, sub 1 1/2 5 shot groups with handloads. nice part is that you can use the irons just fine with the scope removed. i installed a rooster cheekrest as the mount does raise your line of sight. personally though, as i have a couple m14's as well, if you have your heart set on a scoped rig, go with the m14.

Anybody have the details of the mounts on M1C's and M1D's ?

Buy the books! But because I know you spend all your pocket money on funny straight walled deer cartridges, I'll oblige. The M1C was a military version of the pre-war civilian Griffin & Howe side mount. The base was screwed to the left sidewall of a certain range of serial numbers of Garands. The M1D was a kit consisting of a new barrel with a flat sided block and a new shorter handguard. Both rifles are a PITA to fire instinctively because the shooter has to hold the rifle off-side of the line of the bore.

The suggestion of the Amega base is as good as anything I know of.
