For my 1912 Chilean Mauser .308 With my eyes and the horrible sights on these rifles ( did people have super human eyes back then?) I'd like to put a scope on and see just how accurate the rifle and my hand loads are. Anyone have experience with the mounts that replace the front sights? I've seen them on Brownells site. Would need a long eye relief scope of course. Thanks

You just pop the rear-sight leaf down, back and it pops out. You can then remove the screw which holds the Spring, or, depending on the Mount, leave it in.

The Mounts I have seen are pretty solid.

LER scope, of course.

The higher the POWER of the Scope, the more finicky it is to get it set up. Most guys use a 2.5 or a 4-power scope. If you could SHOOT with irons, you will find either of these entirely adequate. I am going to have to think about doing this myself; my eyes aren't getting any younger, either! NICE thing about getting older is that, often, your eyes IMPROVE their distance vision. All you do then is get the front sight into the back-sight V and aim with the front sight. Square-post and U-notch ar easier for this, but Jerry always liked that V-notch and barleycorn.

Once you get it all set for your eyes, there should be no problems.

Hope this helps.
