Hey Guys,

I have a sporterized p14 with the rear ears milled off, I was wondering was people have done to scope this kind of rifle? Have they used a single base? or have people put a base on the front and on the rear, and if so what kind/ model of bases have you used. Any help would be great!

thanks

I used a one piece leuopold for a Rem 700 long action.
Mine still had the ears on so I sent it to my smith to be milled and had him mount the base at the same time.

There is no standard profile once the grinder lifts off the receiver. The steel in the P14/M17 is really hard, and will make just about every screw hole either off centre or impossible to thread. There are also some differences - one of the two models has a vertical oval milling cut in the sight area. One oldtime gunsmithing trick is to make a spot annealing soft-er spot.

My #1 deer rifle is a commercial conversion much like yours. It has a simple length of Weaver rail mounted between the front ring and the rear bridge. One end is slightly rounded, the other is flat. (I once found Weaver rail on epay by the foot from a shop that makes the stuff.)

like the above, depending on the profile contour of your receiver, it could be shaped like a remington, winchester or even flat. A lot of the ones i have seen are matched to a remington contour. take it to your smith and have him match the bases to your gun. nothing worse than buying the wrong bases or getting the right contour only to find out that your front and rear base are different heights.

Stick a B-Square no gunsmithing scope mount on it. works great without the hassle.

Traditionally they were milled either M-70 or M-30.That's if decent gunsmith did them.If not find a couple of Weaver bases that are close and use a Burris Signature Z- Rings and maybe with the offset inserts.

I've got two BSA P-14 reworks - I fitted both with weaver two piece bases, however, both required shimming to varying degrees - ie they were ground to slightly different radii!
A custom one piece base is probably the way to go ... Not sure about the no gunsmithing mounts such as B Square and S+K - I believe they rely upon the rear sight cross pin. (I have an S+K - its definitely unsuitable..)

Th B-Square uses only the sight spring recess in the reciever and the sight spring screw hole. It does not use the sight cross pin.
