:evil::evil: I guess that got your attention eh?:evil::evil:

Anyways, before you ban me from cgn permanently hear me out.

First off, I will only pursue this if it does not permanently alter the rifle.

Ok. After experiencing just how accurate a ross can be with iron sights I decided I'd like to see how far it could be pushed with a scope. My current setup looks like this:

And here you can see the sheet metal mount that has been made for it.
Please note, the fabricated mount uses the 4 screws that are used to mount the real rear sight bridge, so no permanent alteration has taken place:

My idea is to make another thicker sheet metal mount, or even a forged, milled, or cnc'd one that would accept a mount for a scope.

1) What do you think? Waste of time or legitimately interesting?

2) What kind of scope and mounts would you suggest? I'm flying blind on this one, I'm just learning about them myself.

Thanks,
H Wally

I don't know if a bridge mount replacing the original rear sight base would support a scope all that well. The spacing betwween the screws is very short. A very small, light scope might be a possibility.

If I ran an arm forwards to rest on the top of the chamber, or even clamp around the barrel similar to where the hand guard goes would that possibly add the required support? If the issue is needing two points to anchor from, a forward clamp arm could also be made to deflect the occasional upward brass away from the scope, and run a mounting rail along it possibly. This is all, of course, musing at this point.

It's already been altered. It doesn't look military original to me.

This is original...

Just below what you quoted I think you'll see I mentioned that the sheet metal is fastened with the same 4 screws that are normally used to hold on the rear sight bridge.

You didn't say if you thought it was a good idea or not either;)

Well - The easy route is to find a surplus rear bridge - as you stated its removeable. Thats what I did, got a couple of Weaver bases, Weaver K-4, and voila, one mean deer gun. (I did have to D+T the receiver ring)
In my own experience, sported milsurp Rosses dont shoot as well as one would expect. You'll note that the factory sporters had a barrel band - this was likely to compensate for the relatively flexy action.
