I have a new to me long action Ruger on the way and I'm anxious to figure out what kind of glass I will be able to put on it. I have a VXII 2-7 unused at the moment that I was hoping to use on her but I am concerned about the short scope body on the long action.

The rifle doesn't have rings with it so I need to pick some up. I understand that they require different ring heights from front to back - what rings would work for this scenario ... will I need extensions and what would be best height for a nice tight fit? I'd like to stick with Ruger rings as I think there integral mounting system is pretty darn slick.

I finally got it all together and it worked out swell. I had success mounting my vxii 2-7 on the ruger using what I believe are #3 and #4 height Ruger rings. There is just enough room on the scope body, and the eye relief works for me. Very happy with this set-up, now to get her on the bench for some play time!

Looks good, what chambering is the rifle ?
I used similar height rings to mount a 6X42 Leupold on my tang safety 257 and the front bell has a bit more than 1/4" clearance.
It works ok and the scope has lots of eye relief..

It's in .270win. Yours sounds like a great little set-up as well.

I actually had it out on the bench today and was very happy to find it shot very close to MOA with my first loads for it! I really like the way these rifles fit and feel in my hands and accuracy never hurts either :)

Mine was made in 1976 and its in really nice shape.
It took very little effort to make tight - grouping loads with 100 gr. and 117 gr. bullets, unfortunately so far I haven't found any deer this season to try it on.
I have played with a few of the older tang safety Rugers and it seems to me that the quality of workmanship in them were better than the new rifles.
