Scoping a SKS?

Hi I am very new to guns, so new in fact that I don't even have my license yet. As soon as I get it though, I am buying a Russian surplus SKS and a crate of Czech surplus ammunition. I have tried shooting with irons and it isn't exaclty my cup of tea so I was wondering how I would go about adding a scope to my future SKS. I read somewhere that you have to drill it to put the scope mount on. Now (finally) to my questions: Where would you recommend I go to get it drilled near Toronto and what kind of scope, or what ranges for a scope would you recommend. I have yet to figure out what the numbers mean for scopes, and I obviously have no idea what makes of scope are good quality. I would greatly appreciate any input.

Wow, have you picked the wrong place to ask that question! The problem is that this forum is kinda dedicated to preserving milsurps and what you are proposing to do is considered "Bubba"-ing, or destroying a rifle. The questions you should ask is if there is a no-drill scope mount for an SKS. Drilling and tapping is irreversible and the rifle will never again be an original. If you insist on drilling it I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for an answer here.

You can get it tapped, or put a replacement cover on it. They are available from Barska and have to be fitted. You either have to use a mil dot or a compact scope. Try a search. There's lots of relevant threads. BTW, welcome to the board.

I'm finding that I want to put a red dot scope on my SKS, but don't want to "Bubba" it permanently. I've looked around and found that the Scout mount that is sold at Marstar is supposed to be good and it replaces the rear sight on the rifle. You don't have to permanently damage the sight, you just remove it and install the rail instead. Check on the Marstar link above to have a look.

The cover mts have problems with retaining their zero.Choate side mt is weaver compatable but hard to find in Canada....................Harold****best not on a collectable SKS

you can get the scope mount from Marstar
They have a type of receiver cover that you put instead of the origninal.
it gives you a weaver rail
this way you won't bubba your gun and yet enjoy the scope

I obviously don't WANT to drill the gun, but I really want a scope that's all. I will look into those replacements for the rear sight, thanks for the quick response guys. I was actually amazed to see 8 posts already.

Wow, this is a real pain. From what I have read all the rear sight replacement mounts are too wobbly to hold zero properly, and because of that the only one Marstar sells has four screws which leave marks. :(
